Backlight display problems

I have a 10GB 3G model and the unit, since new in the box has had a backlight display problem. There are dark, semi-circular shadows on the left side of the display and when you have the backlight on and play with the contrast, there is an elliptical-shaped shadow in left side center of the screen affecting a few dozen pixels.

I sent it back to Apple for repair (after comparing it with display models at CompUSA, which were perfect, no shadows, no darkened pixels) and Apple just sent it back without fixing it and copped an attitude with me when I called them again to get it fixed. I spoke with a tech person named Jeff, who was indifferent at first and tried to make me believe I should accept the problem since the unit functions o.k. other than the backlight. I am sending it again anyway, since I did not pay for a defective unit, and will keep sending it in until they fix it.

I want to know two things:
1. Has anyone else had this problem with their display
2. Has anyone else been treated this way by Apple when they simply asked for a fully-functional unit.

I have been planning on buying a powerbook as my next computer, but after this treatment by Apple, I am having serious second thoughts. They have a reputation of being top-notch both with their design, functionallity and service, but they have suffered a blow if they are unwilling to stand behind their product.
