Jazz!

Doesnt anyone listen to jazz music at all in here? I have noticed that mostly people are sticking to rock type bands, especially classic rock and kiddie punk type crap.. I listen to all kinds of music myself (jazz, electronic, rock, classical, metal), but of all these i enjoy jazz the most.. Anyone else listen to it (oh, and saying "I listen to miles every once in awhile" doesnt count).

I have 29 jazz cd's on my iPod- my entire collection. I'm beyond 'I listen to miles every once in awhile', but my no means an expert.

I'm a big fan of Stan Getz' samba/bossa nova music. And I haven't heard any Charles Mingus I haven't liked.

The Jaco Pastorius anthology Punk Jazz is really growing on me too.

Its nice to know there are a few other jazzers in the forums! I have much of the same stuff you have salsa, although I dont like stan kenton (but only after i listened to thier records for quite awhile).. You ever heard of Charler Hunter? If not, I suggest you check him out, Ive been listening to his albums a ton lately..

I've yet to burn ALL my jazz (and I'm looking for more CDs to buy & burn) but here's what I've got so far:

The Bad Plus - These Are The Vistas
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
Dizzy Gillespie All Star Orchestra - Things To Come
Eddie Daniels - Benny Rides Again
John Coltrane - Blue Train
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream

don't know if you include blues in here or not, but a couple of Stevie Ray Vaughn, too.

I'm not a Jazz expert by any means, but I have listened to both Stanley Turrentine and Doug Robinson and I like what I hear.

The Big Bad Jazz Thread (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=musicexplore&action=display&num=1050542576) exposed the jazz lovers on the old forum and if you read it, I did follow up on the recommendations of Chris(dmt1) and John (eustacescrubb) as posted in this thread (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3739).

I'm totally that "I listen to Miles every once in awhile" guy. I really like Miles Davis but haven't invested time and energy into a diverse Jazz collection. I have around 2500+ Cds but only 15-20 of those are Jazz.

I would like to get more into real old-skool instrumental Jazz though. I hate that Jazz-Lite garbage!

My husband is not only a Jazz lover but a Jazz Musician. He can tell after listening to a few bars who plays sax on any song...

And he recommends anything by George Adams/Don Pullen, Jimmy Carter, David Murray, Lester Bowie or John Scofield...

He has got me to appreciate these folks even tho' I'm a rock chick at heart

I love Jazz. My "Jazz" playlist is the largest of my 20 playlists with 426 tunes and features Joe Sample, Al Di Meola, Hubert Laws, Earl Klugh, Bob James, Kirk Whalum, Oscar Peterson, Russ Freeman & the Rippingtons, Stan Getz and so on...

Metheny has his own playlist with over 200 tunes... :D

Check out anything on the ECM record label. This tends to be very contemporary. Some of my favourites include:

Officium - Jan Garbarek/The Hilliard Ensemble
Madar - Jan Garbarek/Anouar Brahem/Shaukat Hussain
Making Music - Zakir Hussain
Vision - Shankar
The K?ln Concert - Keith Jarrett
Road To Saint Ives - John Surman
Astrakan Caf? - Anour Brahem Trio
Thimar - Anouar Brahem/John Surman/Dave Holland
Barzakh - Anouar Brahem
A Wider Embrace - Trevor Watts Moir? Music Drum Orchestra

A lot of the music is heavily influenced by World/roots traditions.

Enjoy!
