Hard drive based recorders?

So far, the only reliable (and affordable) recording equipment come from MiniDisc player/recorders. I am currently using a Sharp MD-MT88 recorder. I think Sharp makes the best MD recorders because of the features they offer, i love the on the fly recording adjustments too. Sony recorders only have hi and low sensitivity switches.

Anyway, the biggest problem i have with MD recording is their #### proprietery ATRAC format. I would LOVE to tranfer my recorded material digitally via Firewire or USB 2.0 instead of through my headphone port in real time. Can you imagine transfering a 3 hour show in real-time to your computer for editing?! It sucks.

I would love to see some hard drive based sound recorders. THere are SOME media players that offer sound recording, but they are only capable of recording through a line signal. That would mean i would have to lug around more equipment so that i can use a standard microphone with the unit. Even 1-2 Gb of storage would be enoegh for a whole night's concert.

The iHP-120 is your best bet.

It does require an external mike, but surely this can't add too much bulk can it? It can record to one file for a maximum of 5 hours, and has a USB2 connection. The iPod does it via a costly external mike, but its sound quality is pitiful (or, according to what I have heard).

If you want to stick with the MD format, Sony offer "NetMD" recorders/players. These offer a USB connection to your computer.
