how to shorten my U2 mp3?
I ripped my best of U2 CD, and I have a problem with one of the songs.
"All I Want Is You" is included as the same track as "October." The track plays "All I Want Is You," waits many seconds, and then plays "October."
Is there some software that will allow me to cut off at the end of the first song? I currently have musicmatch and mp3gain on my computer. I could not find a way to do this with either software.
Thanks,
Scotty

eac ( http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) has an option to delete that gap while ripping the song. the software compendium ( http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2286) (in addition to the linked website) explains what eac is and gives you some alternatives for mmjb.

Shame you don't have iTunes - I have just written an FAQ for this very problem. Little comfort to you but it may help others -
Q. I have a song that has an annoying minute long silence at the end. Can I get rid of it?
A. Yes. Well not get rid of it, but you can fool iTunes into skipping over the silence and onto the next song. While playing the track in iTunes make a note of the point you want the song to end by watching the Elapsed Time progress bar. Press the Command-i which will open the song info window. Select the options tab and select enable stop time, then edit the time to the point you wish the track to finish. Click OK. When you next play the track, iTunes will stop at the new time. Although the whole track will be copied to your iPod it is smart enough to end the track at the time point you have selected.

the silent part still takes up the harddrive space though, doesn?t it? you just skip listening to the sound of silence (<-- what an amazing pun. i ought to have my own sitcom ;) :D ). eac deletes that portion.

Open the .wav in something like Wavelab Lite or Cool Edit and manually chop off that section. It's easy, you literally just select the section you don't want and press the delete key. Save the .wav and then convert it to mp3 as usual.
I forgot about that song on the U2 CD, though if I was searching for that particular tune I'd instinctively go to the Rattle & Hum copy. :D
