Do you want to copy all of your songs from your iPod to your PC, then intialize it and put the songs back on?
If so, then check out this post that Adam and I wrote. http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4719

What else do you have on your iPod, besides the songs? Do you also have some video files as well? You said you wanted to "i want to get all my songs off my ipod so i can clean out my ipod and basically start all over again". Well that message tells you how to move all of you music to your hard drive so that you can start all over again and not lose the music. So, what are you worried about losing?

Here's the easiest way:
Connect the iPod
Open it in My Computer
Open the hidden ipod_control folder
Copy the Music folder to your PC
Launch MC9
Click on File>Import Media, select the Music folder you just copied to you PC from the iPod
Let it import.
When done, highlight all the tunes in MC9, right-click, select Library Tools>Rename Files From Properties.
On the dialog box that comes up, select your Base Directory (e.g. "My Music"), your Directory Rule (e.g. "Artist/Album") and your file naming convention (e.g. Artist - Album - Track# - Track Name.mp3").
Click "OK".
It will rename (essentially moving) the files based on their tags and get them all nice an organized.
Then Initialize the iPod.
