Cannot rip cds in Media Center 9
Looking for some help here. I was having problems with itunes in that it would not rip any songs off cds. It would recognize the cd just fine, and open itunes, and even load in the cd info from the cddb database. However, when I would go to "Import" the cd it does not rip it. It looks like its trying, but it just stops by each song for a few seconds and goes on to the next one.
I downloaded Media Center 9 in an attempt to find a new program that allows me to rip in a format that shows the right tags in itunes and/or on my ipod. So, i installed Media Center and run it and when I go to rip a song in it a message pops up saying something about it can't read the device due to a "digital" issue. I went into my properties of the cd rom (in win2k) and checked the box to allow digital reading on the cd rom drive. I tried it both ways, no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions of things to try to get this to work?? I can use RealOne and it works fine to rip, encode, etc. No problems so I know the drive is ok. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try ripping in Digital Secure mode. It's under Advanced Ripping Settings.

Just out of curiosity, what is that mode? Is that a "fix" for issues like mine? I remember seeing that option in there, but it didn't sound "right" so I didn't enable it. I'm going to have to wait until 5pm until I get home, but wondered what it does differently. Thanks.

It does multiple rereads of your disc to get it right--it's slower, but more accurate than the other ripping modes. It's essentially the safest way to rip. If that doesn't work I'd post if over at the Jriver boards, along with your system info.

Yeah, i'm wondering if the digital secure mode will do it because it doesn't even spin the cd up. Its like it attempts to hit the drive, and then the error message pops up. But heck, i'll try anything. Wonder why i'm having so many problems in itunes and MC, but not in RealOne where ripping is a breeze. It has to be something with how hte software recognizes the drive right?

I just used ultravnc to access my home computer and I ran a few tests. First, I switched to the digital secure mode and i got the same message "Read track failed. Failed to extract digital audio."
Then, I put it on analog extraction and when it went to rip the first track it gave me this message "Failed to access CD drive. Close other applications using the drive and try again."
Do you think Musicmatch and/or itunes are "holding" that drive hostage? I uninstalled both in a last ditch effort to free up the drive. By the sounds of it that seems to be the issue? Any suggestions?

Not sure, but we're not CD drive guru's here.
You should post the issue over at the JRiver board (for MC9) and include your system info. YOu can get it by going to Help>System Info in MC9.
I read that iTunes did some nastiness to some users CD drives.
Can you rip OK in iTunes? Don't answer that here...post that information in your post over at the JRiver board. ;)

well, i think i might have figured out the cd rom access issues, which might also be the problem many others are having with itunes and mc9 ripping and playing their cds.
last night in a last ditch effort to get mc9 or itunes working i disabled some of the drivers for the IDE controllers. not a suggested practice however as it rendered my PC disabled for good! i've done it before playing around so i knew i was burnt. it was time for a clean wipe and brand new install anyway. installed win2k again (all data was ok on a separate partition) and that all went fine. now was the time to play as none of the other software was loaded yet (office, adobe, etc). the first thing i installed was mc9, and this time the "normal" ripping worked! so, i was super suspicious about those IDE controllers, which i think are drivers for the controllers on the motherboard. so, i installed the drivers that came on my MB cd and low and behold i got the error once again in mc9 saying "Read track failed." so i had my answer, it was the IDE controller drivers that were throwing it off. the thing i found out was that the drivers from the manufacture include a utility that allows you to switch from PIO to UDMA. it sets it to UDMA by default. switching it back to PIO allowed me to use the MB drivers with mc9. hopefully some others having issues read this and try it out. its strange though because realone and winamp can rip in either mode. i guess so handle it better.

Can you post this at the JRiver boards? Maybe they can do something to make sure it doesn't happen in MC9...not sure, but maybe.
