# 1 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
HOLY CRUM! That is amazing...how'd they sneak THAT in!!!!!!!
# 2 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Actually, the lone file I downloaded from iTunes carried an ".m4p" extension.
MC 9.1.282 supports ".m4a" extension. I simply renamed the ".m4p" to ".m4a" and the file played in MC9.
Not sure why the confusion on file extension...(apple's, mine or MC9's??)
# 3 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Could you tag it OK mark? That's always been one of the big issues AFAIK.
Adam
# 4 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
the .m4p signifies that the file is a protect AAC file. I think this proves that the protection is built into the file connected to the computer and not in itunes itself that you were able to just simply change the file name to .m4a and have i play into MC9
Cheers,
Stu
# 5 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Note everyone, they pulled .282, it's .283 that you want now.

# 6 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
.283 now includes ".m4p" and ".aac" extensions... !! :) :)
.m4p file would NOT play on my home computer...I neeed to authorize the file in iTunes, as expected...

Yes, I tagged the file in MC9 just fine!
# 8 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Has anyone gotten m4a or m4p files to actually transfer with MC9? MC9 recognizes my aac files but it thinks they are movies so it opens up the movie display when it plays it. I can tag it but when I tried to manually transfer to the ipod doesn't work.
# 9 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
There's a bug that they gotta fix, but there is a workaround.
Click on Tag Info. Then click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner of the Action Window. Select "Fields To Show>File Info". Then change the Media Type to "Audio". They're being set to Video right now, which is wrong.
That'll fix everything for ya.

# 10 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Yeah, but they still don't play...Saw your post over at Jriver, looks like it's just a garden variety bug--bet they get it fixed tomorrw...

Y'all will let me know when they start shipping an AAC encoder with it, aye?

# 12 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Thanks for the tip Adam. Since changing them to audio, they now play right, and transfer to the iPod. Sadly the iTMS store files transfer to the iPod but they won't play(on the ipod, they play fine in media center 9). But the .m4a files are a step in the right direction. I think AAC files sound really good on the ipod, and its definitely something to consider encoding in, especially if MC9 gets it built in.

Hmmm...
My lone ".m4p" file, downloaded from iTunes and pushed to iPod by MC9, plays on my iPod just fine... The song is now embedded in my normal library.
Before I *RIPPED* iTunes from my system, I also did successfully push my ".m4p" file to iPod and played it there...
# 15 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Mark,
I think you're the only one that's gotten it to play--it just skips over it to the next song on mine (and I think a number of other folks.).
They'll get it fixed though...
Then, it's on to dynamic playlists! (I hope).

# 16 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
So will MC9 be able to encode AAC files? Maybe by calling functions from Quicktime 6.4?

# 17 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
I installed iTunes on my PC here at work (always good for testing - doesn't mess up my home PC :)) and ripped the only CD I had with me into AAC at 192bps. I then imported the 17 tracks into MC 9.1.283 successfully, although they were listed under Video. I changed the file type to Audio. I also had to retag the files since none of the tags were read successfully. After that I uploaded the files to my iPod using drag and drop (no synching here at work). The tracks play with no problem at all.
As an aside, if I was to encode using AAC what setting is equivalent to LAME APS? Also am I imagining things or does 192 AAC sound better on the iPod than APS mp3's? It's really difficult to do a blind test at the moment, I may try one tonight.
# 18 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
It's almost sounding to me like some of the people who are having success are doing fresh installs of MC9, so I think that tonight I'm going to backup the library, uninstall, and reinstall MC. I wonder if the FUBAR behavior I'm still seeing is related to having in_mp4.dll installed into MC9 prior to the upgrade.
# 19 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
I just encoded my first single in AAC and they play fine, but there does seem to be a error in the time showed, but I can live with it. Two tracks that were very short stayed on 0.00 but the other two played perfectly.
Oh, and I didn't do a new installation of MC9, I just installed .280, I think, over the top and reinitialized the iPod.

# 20 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
I don't think 280 had AAC support, could be wrong though.
Has anyone tried downloading an Itunes music store tune via MC9 to the ipod? Maybe that's the hangup--I haven't tried to transfer a CD I've encoded myself to AAC...

# 21 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
I have transferred the one song I bought in the iTMS to my iPod using MC9.1 (build 283). It went over fine but wouldn't play. Lots of folks over at the JRiver boards are having the same problem. Hopefully it will get ironed out soon.

# 22 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
I downloaded a single '.m4p" file from iTunes. Using 9.1.283 I was able to add to my MC9 library and push to iPod. Song plays on both MC9 and iPod.
Note: Needed to change .m4p to be seen as an "audio file"
# 23 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Yeah, I changed mine to an audio file too--it transfers but doesn't play...Maybe I need to reinstall MC9--I had some Itune compatibility problems until I got all the proper boxes checked in Itunes.

MC 9.1.284 which is now available should support AAC properly. Please post any issues and I will address them quickly.

# 29 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
markp99: I'm very surprised that you got m4p to work especially when I haven't heard anyone else getting it to work. I'm using .283 and Normal AAC Files play and transfer just fine but when I tried to transfer a m4p to the ipod, it transfered fine but did not play. So then I tested it in MC9 and played the track from the ipod, Played just fine. Tested on ipod again, nope. Then tried renaming to m4a then transferring, same thing. No play on the ipod. I even tried playing it in iTunes first, then transferring. Nope still no go. Can you tell me exactly the steps you did to get it working? I was importing the file by right clicking on it in explorer and choosing import. Then doing a manual sync to the ipod.
# 30 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Nothing special here...
1. Downloaded .m4p file from iTunes (*)
2. Copied to desktop (for convenience)
3. Renamed to .m3p (before [~.283] added that extension)
4. in MC9, "Import Media" (needed to select AAC as a file type to look for)
5. Played .m3p in MC9, after chagining to audio file (fixed in .285)
6. Added the file to an existing playlist for sync to iPod
7. Sync'd as normal
8. Found file in playlist on iPod as expected...an played it...
Same exact process I would do for ANY music file...
(*) Note: I actually downloaded from iTunes at work and copied the file to iPod (via Disk mode, not iPod sync) to transprt the file back home. I had to "authorize" the file in iTunes at home before I could play in MC9 (got an iTunes DRM message when launched in MC9).
# 31 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Thats odd. I tried renaming to .m3p just to see what would happen and media center wouldn't recognize it at all nor would it play. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here. Oh yeah and I just checked on .286. .m4p files are still recognized as video while .m4a files are recognized as audio.
# 32 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
Has anyone got the tag information coming up properly in MC? When you sync a aac file to the iPod, do the MC tags or the iTunes tags get used?

But, if you've got a sane naming convention, you can still do a "tag from filename". I actually like ripping in EAC better still, so I do that using an autoit script that feeds into QT Pro and spits out my m4a files.
The m4a files seem to work fine for me, but m4p files are only working in MC9, not on the iPod.
If you were using in_mp4.dll from WinAmp to allow playback previously, you should uninstall it from MC before upgrading to .286 - I had issues until I did that.
# 35 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
I'm using a utility called nencode as an external AAC encoder for MC9. It uses the AAC encoding files of Nero 6 to do its work. From what I've read the Nero encoder is good. I like it because it has many options including variable bit rate, unlike iTunes. Using nencode I choose the "extreme" variable option (from memory it's around 150-190kbps), which gives me smaller files than mp3 lame aps and slightly better, more accurate sound (IMHO).
I encode my music to .ape files for easier re-encoding in the future (saves re-ripping) and then do my mp3/aac encoding from those files. To get around the tagging issue in MC9, the ape files are created with filenames made up of the useful information I'm going to want in my tags: [Artist]^[Album]^[Track #]^[Name]^[Genre]^[Date (year)]. (I use the ^ as a seperator).
Then after encoding them to aac it's an easy process to use MC9's "fill properties from file names" option to tag them up.
Not too long-winded and the results are nice clean AAC files for your beloved iPod to chew on, which it does happily :).

I could not get MC9's fill properties from file name to work on Itunes music store tunes--had to do it manually. Maybe it's working in these later builds though...

# 37 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
It doesn't appear to me that MC9 is actually tagging the files. You can do a sync and get the information off of the iPod and into MC9, and MC9 is using the information to update the iPods database, but if you delete a file from the library then you lose all of the info and you need to start over again.

Yeah...I don't know if the QuickTime functions they're using for playback will allow them to actually read/edit the tags present in the files. All I think they did was to suppress the error message that you normally get in MC9 when it can't write a tag to the file for M4[AP] files. Hopefully that's on the to-do list along with "Analyze Audio" support.

Well, no success with 289 getting playable AAC on the ipod for me (by the looks of the Jriver board, I'm not the only one). Maybe tomorrow...

# 41 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
I don't think so as there's no exe and I'm no expert in getting dll's in action. The nencode thing just needs to be put in the audioplugins folder (with mfc71.dll) and then you can use it as I mentioned earlier as an external encoder in MC9's encoding options.
Mart at 2007-11-15 18:00:40 >

# 42 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
You could try setting it up as an external encoder in MC9's ripping options--you can just browse to it through MC9 using the encoding options page (That's how I've got my LAME encoder set up--it's a better version than what MC9 provides).
Not sure if it would work for AAC, but it would be worth a shot...
dmt1 at 2007-11-15 18:01:45 >

# 43 Re: Latest Build [282] Supports AAC Files!
That's what I'm doing!
Nencode is the missing link as it provides an exe which you can use as an external encoder in MC9, I thought Kurt was wanting to just use Nero's encoder without nencode.
Basically, after installing Nero 6, there's a folder which has its AAC encoder files in (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins). You copy in nencode.exe and mfc71.dll (you can get that at http://www.s3dconnector.net/download.php) to that folder and point MC's external encoder function to it with:
%in %out
as the arguments. The only thing you don't get straight away is tags, which is why I mentioned how I rip the discs in the first place.
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
