Up-Converting files?

In the folly of my newbie-ness, I ripped all 300+ CDs at a bitrate of 128kbps. Now that I have my 40GB iPod, I have the capacity to handle file sizes of 192kbps. So I figured I would just start re-ripping at the higher bitrate. Well about half a dozen CDs into it, I stumbled upon a menu option in Musicmatch that appears to allow upconversion of mp3s.

Does anyone have any experience with this function? Can you really upconvert a file from 128kbps to 192kbps? If so, that would be incredibly convenient and time-saving. Or am I better off just ripping my CDs at the higher rate.

Thanks!!

Upconverting increases file size but NOT quality. It's simply impossible to get higher quality unless you re-rip all the songs.

Thanks, seinman!
As I figured, you can't get something from nothing :D

According to psychacoustic studies, most people can't hear a perceptible difference after 128kps. Just keep that in mind.

I do 90% of my iPodding in my car, so I think that my solution will be to re-rip those select CDs that could benefit from a higher bitrate, such as some older CDs and those with poor transfers.

Thanks for the input, everyone!
