Is there something like mp3gain Album gain in MC9?

Well I've taken the plunge with MC9 and (after some pain and the dreaded exclamation mark folder) I've got it working. I can see now how great the smart playlists are if you want full control.

I've tried to answer this question by searching but not found the answer.

I've used mp3gain for a while and specifically the album setting. This adjusts all tracks on an album to an average level (I use 89dB) but keeps the relative levels the same:

If the average for the album is 94dB, and song A is 98dB while song B is 90dB, song A will become 93dB (-5) while song B will become 85dB (also -5).

I can't immediately see if MC9's replay gain function will do something like this?

Replay gain is just want you want. It normalizes to 83db, but it will do exactly what you're talking about...

To use it, select all your songs, right click and select Analyze Audio.

This will take a while, so let it run overnight. It will not alter the source files...just store a + or - db level in MC9s database.

Once that's done, to get it on your iPod, just right click the iPod in MC9, select "Set Volume Adjustment". Then check the Apple Replay Gain option and boost the volume slider to +12db. Since they base theirs off of 83db average, you want to boost it up. Don't worry, this will still preserve the normalization.

Then sync and make sure "Update Tags" is checked. It'll be a quick sync as it just applies the Replay Gain values to the iPod's database...it doesn't reupload the songs..doesn't need to.

Thanks Adam but I guess I just have one more question. Does replay gain leave relative levels on the same album the same or does it boost/cut all songs to the same level regardless of album.

It does it for all songs--regardless of album.

Just as an aside, if I have an EU pod, do I need to set the settings any differently or run this fix in conjunction with euPod?

EuPod will overwrite whatever Volume settings you use in MC9, they can't really be used in conjunction with each other because they both use the same fields in the iPod's database.

So, whichever program you run last will be the one that controls the volume...

Hope that makes sense...
