more newbie problems.....
Sorry to bother you all, but I've been struggling with my problems for several hours and I've read a bunch of old threads without success. Here are my issues:
- tried to upload more music, and though the files transferred no new music showed up as being available on the Ipod (file progress bar progressed but the write progress bar did not move)_
- then decided to do a restore and re-initialize, and tried to upload all my music. Files again transferred, but no music showed up on the ipod. Ipod began disconnecting itself from my computer after about 5 seconds if I did not perform some action (like dragging files to it) within that timeframe.
- did another restore,, upgraded to the latest version of MC9.1, initialized and again tried to transfer files. In the middle of transfer received an error message that transfer had been stopped because the file size was too large. I'm trying to transfer about 2GB music onto a 15GB Ipod, and at the moment am dragging the files directly to the I: drive rather than using playlists and synchronizing. Now, when I plug the Ipod into the firewire port it will not connect to the computer at all.
Any advice on how to get me back up and running would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Michael

Michael:
Make sure you don not have the Apple iPod manager installed. Also, if you used MMJB, make sure it's COMLPETELY uninstalled (including the program folder).
When your Pod disconnects after a short time, iPod Manager is usually the culprit.
Lastly, I advise using the "Synchronize" to upload the Pod instead of drag-n-drop. Just right click on the handheld letter on the left pane and pick it out of the menu.
Good luck.

I'd definitely advise you to use the synch method like Jacko says. It is far more powerful than the drag and drop method and has been more thoroughly tested. Take a look at the sticky post I made yesterday called "How I manage music on my iPod" for some advise on using synching and smartlists to manage your music.

The Ipod Manager was the culprit. Phil, I'm going to look at your sticky post now on how to manage and upload files. Thanks for all of your help!

OK, now I have synched 2.6GB worth of files into the Ipod. The files are there, but nothing shows up on the screen of the Ipod. I've done a rebuild database from ipod to no avail. I'll research old threads to find the answer, but if you know please respond with a quick note.

Michael

OK, the way I synched is by selecting the all music smartlist. I read a few pages back that it has a bug. I'll create my own smartlist and try again....

OK, synched a different list (files uploaded in the last week) and the files go into the ipod but the album / artist etc information still does not go in so the music can't be viewed or played on the ipod. I did an initialize before the most recent synch, so that isn't it.

Michael:
Do this:
Make your own Smartlist. Click the down arrow, select Add Rule>Advanced>File Type. Check off MP3
Right-click the iPod in MC9 and select Rebuild iPod database. Should take 10 minutes.
Sync by clicking on the iPod Toolbar icon. Select the new smartlist you made. The songs will all be on there no problem.

Made my own smartlist, per your instructions. Rebuilt ipod database - only took 20 seconds. Half way through synch process received an error message that the Ipod was full. Turns out the ipod's battery had run out.
Recharged the Ipod, initialized it to wipe out eisting files, rebuilt ipod database (only took a couple of seconds) and synched. This time the synch completed, but the files are still not displayed on the ipod.
Help!

Michael

Are you absolutely sure you don't still have the All Music smartlist still checked off? I've seen that happen because it's hidden in that playlist group.

Did the following - initialized, re-built the database, and synched making sure that the only smartlist / playlist checked was the one I created (ie. file = mp3, I expanded all of the trees to make sure nothing else was checked). Still nothing shows up on the ipod at the end of the synch process.

Have you done a full restore with the ipod updater, initialized, then synched? I had to do a full restore to get the latest build to work properly.

That did the trick! I really should have tried that on my own. Anyhow, Chris and Adam, thank you both.

Yeah, I think we need to stop recommending the initialize trick (Chris and Timmy ;)). Seems like that doesn't fix the iPod database.
I've been leaning towards the rebuild iPod database option to save folks time rather than restore as that should do basically the same as a restore but maintain the songs on the iPod (no need to reupload)
The only thing to remember is that after a rebuild you do need to do another sync to get the playlists on (but it'll be quick sync).
