Also.. If i am listenig to a 5 hour book, and then I want to listen to some music.. can i then come back and pick up where i left off?

Audible should work with the following combo:
Firmware 2.01 or 1.3 on 2nd gen iPods
AudibleManager 4.0
MusicMatch 7.5.5115 or higher.
That is the only offically recogized combo that the bookmarks will work with. If you have used anything else besides that, you should reformat your iPod, then use the prescribed software.
Since you posted in the MC9 section, I assume you are in the MC9 section. MC9 is adding Audible support but it is still in beta and I don't recommend it yet... but stay tuned! They are getting close.

2.10 for a 40 gb pod.
pc pod
audible 4.0
and mc 9.1.262
P.S.. I am not that concerned with syncing bmarks to mc9 as I am in just having the ipod work on its own

yeah, even in its final form, i don't think MC9 will resync the bookmarks from MC9 to the iPod like it sounds that Mac iTunes does. I've never found that too be particularly needed anyway, as long as they don't get lost on the iPod.
But as for working on the iPod, I think if you use the prescribed software, it should all work.
MC9 is beta and they only recently added Audible support. I think the final release will be good but I wouldn't recommend it yet for use with Audible.

Hmm...my experience has been different. I just bought MC9 about a week and a half ago, and just subscribed to audible this past week and am almost done with Ender's Game. I'm currently using .264 of the beta and audible works perfectly with it. It is remembering my bookmarks, if I decide to listen to music, and it is remembering them, knock on wood, when I sync.
BTW, I've uninstalled the Apple iPod Manager, and I never connect my iPod while the Audible Manager is running. Once I download them I shutdown the Audible Manager, import them into MC9 and use a smartplaylist to get them onto the iPod. Again, everything is working great for me, but I do usually make a mental note of where I am at, just in case.

Southside,
Yes, I found MC9xxx.264 worked well as far as Audible goes. It holds bookmarks and seemed to work generally well, as far as Audible goes.
HOWEVER, this is beta software, and as you problably know,
the subseqent builds have been crashing on the iPods. So I don't recommend it for most people at this point. But its getting close...so like I said, stay tuned.

I wouldn't even have considered using MC9, or even buying it, if it wasn't for the beta version that supported playcounts and ratings. Yes, MC9 is a nice program without those features, but frankly it wasn't worth it for me to buy it. As with any beta program there have been a few bumps in the road, but frankly I don't see any reason why someone shouldn't jump right in and start using the .264 version to get the full experience of using the WiPod and since 9.1 is going golden next week this will give you a good jumpstart on the new features. Oh, and just remember to make frequent copies of you media library and everything will be OK.

parannoya,
When you say "holds bookmarks" do you mean that the Audible book (or whatever) will start from the point where you stopped, when you return to it? You can listen to Audible, go to music, turn the ipod off. Come back later & pickup Audible where you left off?
Does it matter, when listening to Audible content, whether you pause or turn off the ipod? And, it maintains these through the syncing process (though the Audible stuff wouldn't necessarily need to be synced).
I ask because I was an Audible user before getting my ipod, so I already have their Otis device - which is very small & works well - but it is one more gadget to keep up with. I tried Audible on the pod w/MC9 a while back & keeping my place seemed more trouble than it was worth.
Am interested in hearing about the improvements in this realm of MC9. jpfeffer's experience sounds closer to what I remember (which was 9.0.??)- jp what version of MC9 are you using?
thanks-
Ruth

Ruth,
On 9.1, Audible bookmarks work just like you described. Doesn't matter if you pause or shut down, you can switch around all you want between books or music, transfer other files, etc. and the bookmarks are solid. Much like the Otis. (I was also a former Otis user).
9.1.264 is the latest "stable" version that works okay with Audible and iPod. (haven't tried the new .268 out today but the last few versions had iPod specific bugs, so I'd stick with .264 for now, if you want to try it.
Personally, I really like using MC9 for Audible, especially since I have lots of MP3 music files also. So I can use one program for everything. I just download the files with AudibleManager, then import them into MC9. I also tag them all with "Audible" in the Album field, so all titles show up under Audible in the album list. makes them easier to find.
I'll post an update after I try .268.

Thanks all!
At this point is it just hit and miss.. Sometimes it is great.. other times it totally forgets. Using the scroll wheel to move a few hours ahead is a real pain... Especially if you are driving... Oh yeah... Say you are like 20 minutes from the end of the 5 +hr book.. Getting it to the point without going to the end is a pain... I had to do it like 4 times while driving back from AZ this weekend.

jpfeffer,
it shouldn't even be hit and miss. Like I said, I'm using 9.1.264 and the bookmarks are solid.
What version are u using?

# 11 Re: audible
I upgraded to 266 on friday. it seemed better than before.. but time will tell..
:0)
# 12 Re: audible
according to the MC9 boards, .266 was causing crashes after sync with iPod. .268 was released today and sounds like its ok so far. I would go ahead and try that.
also, if your still losing bookmarks, it might be worth reformatting your iPod.

jpfeffer-
thanks for the particulars, I may give it another whirl with.268 (I can confirm the problems with versions since .264  - though I was able to get everything onto the ipod, but then no syncing!).
I've installed .268 but haven't had time yet to check it out. It's gotten positive comment from at least one person on the jriver board who had reported the syncing issue with the earlier builds.

I gave .268 a quick run last night. So far so good!
I synched and transfered individual tracks 3 times with no problem.
