Media Core has encountered a problem!

Hi,

I?ve only had my 3G 20gig iPod for a few days and it was working ok (ish) with MC9.1, I say ish because it crashed every now and then and it would also take a few minutes to connect with my PC (Win XP). In order to connect my iPod to my PC I first have to dock it in the normal way, then my PC will recognise it and in about 1 minute it will just eject it without me doing a thing!! (even if it?s part way through a sync) Then I have to right-click the iPod logo in the taskbar and select ?Mount iPod?, wait for the ?successfully mounted iPod? screen and away I go. :)

But today every time I try to import iPod data to MC (to update my tags) it crashes and I get a ?Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close? message appear.

I?ve just updated to version 9.1.265 thinking this might help but it doesn?t.

Is anyone else having this sort of trouble?

So far I?m not that impressed with the iPod?s compatibility with Windows PC?s and also I?m not that impressed with MC9.1, I?ve paid $39.98 for something which is basically littered with bugs and does not do what I bought it to do.

Rant over!

Dave

Do you have either mmjb or the ipod manager on your computer? If so, get rid of them...That should take care of the ejecting problems.

Before you try to synch again, go into Library>Update library and make sure delete files not on HD is checked...

Also, make sure there are no nonmp3 files in the playlists you are trying to synch.

If all this fails, do a full restore on your ipod with the ipod updater, initialize for MC9, and give it a go.

Chris you?re a star!!!

I deleted iPod manager and that solved the ?self ejecting? problem. :) :) :)

I did the following 3 things:

Before you try to synch again, go into Library>Update library and make sure delete files not on HD is checked...

Also, make sure there are no nonmp3 files in the playlists you are trying to synch.

If all this fails, do a full restore on your ipod with the ipod updater, initialize for MC9, and give it a go.

But it still crashes, what happens is this, immediately after a successful sync or iPod data import it crashes giving the same message ?Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close?

Perhaps this is a 9.1.265 specific problem?

According to the message board over at J.River, the 265 build is causing some people problems. I understand that there will be a build tonight which may address the issue. Feel free to post over there under the POST IPOD QUESTIONS HERE thread.

I tried build 265 last night and had the same issues you are reporting. I rolled back to build 251 which has been stable for me. Ahhh, the joys of being a guinea pig!

Ok, that's good--well it's not good, but that means it'll be fixed tonight. I synched last night with 265 with no problems, but I only synched once, and apparently got lucky. Hang in there--they'll get the crashing problem fixed with the next build.

Yeah Dave Day, sadly we more often than not have to deal with Apple's poor software for the iPod. The best way to set up your PC for use is to not have anything installed from the Apple CD (except the Updater, that's OK).

Sounds like you're all set with that though.

In terms of problems, you might want to try this: right-click the iPod and select "Rebuild iPod Database". You're iPod's database probably got corrupted when iPod Manager broke the connection.

If that works, then do another sync to get the playlists back on.

**EDIT** Just read over on the JRiver boards that Steve fixed a bug that was introduced in last night's build. It should resolve this issue.

Thanks for your help guys, I tried doing the "Rebuild iPod Database" Thingy but it didn't work. I will have to wait untill the bug is fixed in the next build (lot's are having the same prob).

Thanks anyway,

Dave
