Ipod wont update..........pls help
I plug in my ipod and it mounts on the desktop fine and opens itunes. Then says its updating songs but doesnt. I can drag and delete files in the firewire disc mode still but itunes wont update to the ipod!
_At the bottom of the itunes window when the ipod is highlighted it shows the ipod info about how much space is left, next to that it has a padlock, is this something to do with it? Im using a 2nd gen 10gig.
I have tried to do the software restore as it says in the apple knowledge base but this does not work as when i slect the ipod to update and restore it says it cannot do it as the ipod does not have osx installed.?
any ideas?
Thanks, jon

Try the following...
In iTunes, click on your iPod's entry in the source list. You might see a blank list if you've recently reset the iPod, or a list of songs if you haven't.
Check the lower right hand corner, there are four buttons - iPod options, equalizer, visual effects and eject. The first one (options) only shows up when you select the iPod in the source list.
Click it and check to make sure your settings are correct. I had the same problem you did and just stumbled across this - checked what I needed and viola - it started working.
Good luck.

I tried to update my software as well and am experiencing the same problem. Have you been able to re-initialize your iPod?
I tried disconnecting power, but it did not fix the problem. The ipod is not reconized by either the mac or the pc.
I search this board and found part of the answer and from there was able to re-initialize my ipod. Try the following...
Try Forced Firewire Mode. On your iPod, try a Reset by pressing and holding the Menu + Pause/Play buttons for 10 seconds or so. At the Apple logo, press the FF and REW buttons until it says "OK to Disconnect". Then connect your iPod to the computer.
Then repeat the reset and forced into firewire mode while connected to the computer. Now the computer will reconize it as a drive and you can rerun the software update and this time when you disconnect, and the reconnect logo apears, connect the ipod and force a reset and the ipod into firewire mode.
This will let the software update complete successfully. Now you can download music to the ipod and do a normal disconnect. Once the ipod is disconnected, reset it and it should work. Or at least it did for me.
I hope this works for you.

I tried emeade's method and it worked, so far. I got my PC to recognize the iPod , but I still have to wait for the flash ROM to take effect before I can see if updating the software actually works. Hopefully it will.
FYI, the apple website was of no help. I got all my aid from this forum :)

I tried emeade's method but after I do the force firewire mod when it is plugged into my mac, I still don't get the computer to recognize it as a drive.
What's even more strange is, if I go into system profiler on my mac, and check what's connect to the firewire ports, it says "iPod".
Man this is frustrating. :(

I am using a PC, maybe that makes a difference...
You know, it's those little painfully frustrating quirks that keep me from buying a Mac.

Has anybody got to the bottom of the wont update problem yet. I have had two ipods, and about to get third over the last 6months.
initially the ipod was great then suddenly one day for no reason my G4 refused to recognise it. It didn't even mount on the desktop, quite often I would eventually get an error message saying something like a disk that is try to mount cannot be recognised, and giving me the options to initialise, ignore, eject. I tried everything and even had an Apple Tech on the phone for nearly two hours before he said send the ipod back we will replace it. The new unit arrived and guess what!? it didn't work! Curiously Apple then sent me a new dock and lead and all was fine. Now I have the same problem again, and apple have said they will send me another replacement ipod.
My only concern is that the 2nd unit only worked with the new cable and dock, is there a problem with these? I have tried cabling straight into the pod but nothing. is there a problem with the ports/connectors themselves?
Any ideas cos I know my new ipod is almost definitely going to cause probs to!
Cheers
Alex

Nope, still haven't found a solution. My G4 still won't recognize my iPod and all I seem to get here in the mac help section is people using windblows telling me to jump on the bandwagon and buy a PC.
If you figure anything out, please let us know. ;)

Well Apple are collecting my 2nd ipod today and replacing it! But i have a feeling when the new one arrives that the same will occur. I am thinking that maybe the cable is at fault here as when apple sent me the first replacement straight out of the box it didnt work, they sent a new cable and dock and was ok... So i am thinking now maybe i will try and find a lead made by someone else. Also if it works on a PC it may have something to do with the firewire card they are using, someone told me the built in apple firewire ports arent the best design... so my other theory is to try a PCI firewire card maybe an Adaptec or something and see what happens!
Anyway if you come up with anything let me know also.
