bpm: Is there a Mac software that does this automatically?

OK, I guess the subject says it all. I am looking for a way to add bpm info to my mp3 library in order to make playlists with songs around the same tempo. Is there a OS X software that does that?

You are right. The question is how can I find the BPM of my tracks in order to make the smart playlist with songs between 100 and 130 bpm for example. I know there is a little script called BPM Inspector which does that, but it involves manually tapping the tempo and I am not about to do that for 1500 tracks... I am looking for an automatic way to do this... Hopefully!

GOOD NEWS

Yes there is a piece of software that does this. Traktor-DJ studio will do the job. It analyses all the songs in your library & gives them a BPM value.

BAD NEWS

It's pro-DJing software, & it's not cheap. :(

It might be a bit too much to buy, if all you want to do is extract BPM's. But if you intend DJing from your computer, it's the best solution currently available for the Mac. I use it professionally several nights a week, & it rocks. :D

Better news maybe,

My brother found a program that does this. You do have to sit through each song individually to do it, but it can work and it's free.

Head over to my idisk public folder (use idisk utility if you have it "studogvetmed")

It is in my folder as a dmg file, ltjBPM

Cheers,
Stu

Thanks everyone. Stu, I downloaded this little app, but you have to do each track manually and it's quite a chore:( As to Tractor DJ, I guess that is what I am really looking for but I can't justify the price just for the bpm feature, so basically I am out of luck...

I have Traktor DJ Studio... is there a script/method to automatically pull the iTunes library through Traktor, and then update the tags with the BPM?

I tried to do the bpm thing a while ago for the same reasons... playing like music together. I didn't get very far. Tapping out what I thought was the bpm using that small utility and then entering it into iTunes wasn't easy.

I lack the musical background and skills to pick out the correct beats... it's not that easy with some complicated music. I also found that it wasn't going to seperate out like music the way I thought.

Picking out the beat is very hard for a program to do in a lot of music. So, most of the programs that will do it are the expensive ones. Some of the music djs get have the bpm indicated. but, that info is not normal in the rest of the world. I can imagin in the near future that online sources will have this info and an apple script will help download it... like album are is now.

I also posted this in the thread "bpm headaches" - just wanted to share with this one, about Blacktree sw's "itunes bpm manager":

Finally got the program running, after the developer spent an hour emailing me back and forth about my woes - and I hadn't even sent him email, he just responded to my post to their forum. It's a great little program, and though you do have to tap out the beats (on your mouse/trackpad/whatever), once you get the tempo down, you just click "set" and it enters the info for you. Pretty cool. But the coolest thing is, their support. It rocks! Thanks, Blacktree software!

Another note - the problem I was having was related to Stuffit - evidently one version caused problems with the script.
