Artist listed Twice!

I don't know why this is happening. In Itunes, I have Jay Z listed twice, and the same with Johnny Cash and A Tribe Called Quest. With both Johnny & Tribe, the second listing of the artist name contains just one song (in Itunes), which is a part of an entire album already listed on the previous name. And with Jay, I have 2 albums of his, each on a separate listing of Jay Z. The problem of course becomes that when transfered to my IPOD, all three of these artists I mentioned are now listed twice in my browse artists list. And when I click on both their names individually, it contains every album by them.

My question of course is, how do I fix this problem? I'm assuming something can be done in Itunes so that Tribe, Johnny and Jay will be listed once when I reload them onto my IPOD? Thanks in advance for any responses!!!!

I had a problem with this and here was my solution:
Check the tag on the mp3 that has the duplicate artist. In the artist field, check that there are not spaces next to the end of the name. If there are, delete them and this should solve your problem.

Lol... Indeed. I was just about to post that. Usually, the problem is some obscurely mispelled artist name, or leading or trailing spaces.

Hey, I checked that out and that isn't the problem. In the case of all 3 artists, the names are spelled exactly the same with no spaces in being different.

The weird thing is, where it lists all the artists in Itunes, it says both those artists names twice. In the case of Tribe, the second name only contains one song. Same with Johnny. And with Jay Z, it has an entirely different album listed on second jay vs. the first jay z.

Hope to hear some more replies. I'm sure there is something I can do in Itunes to fix this. Thanks!

Apparently, sometimes when albums/artists are tagged, in some programs they add spaces, this makes it differ to a seemingly exact copy of it, so check any spaces you may have.

I had this happen with george michael...on one album the 'ae' was a funny joined character. I tried selecting all the songs and editing the artist name to george, then back to george michael. The ipod didn't update the new names though.
So then I unchecked all the songs in iTunes to remove them from the iPod, then rechecked to put them back. That worked.

Nope. None of these things have worked.

I have the same problem. For example, when i do a artist search for Common, I see 3 Commons, and they all have the same songs!!! its not like each Common has different songs, they all have the same exact albums and songs. I guess nobody knows what thats about

jilla,

when you add those common songs, doesn't he show up 3 times on your ipod? I wouldn't care if it just messed up on my itunes, but my ipod having artists names listed twice is unacceptable.

Just wanted to give an update.

I erased all files from those 3 artists I mentioned initally that were showing up twice in Itunes. I then re ripped their albums, and that seems to have cleared up the problem. They are all now listed once in both Itunes and my Ipod. I rule.
