Manual sync -- how do I do it?
I understand that I don't have to automatically sync, and I understand that I make the switch using the ipod settings screen. But how do I actually do the sync manually?
Do I drag things? Do I check boxes? Give me the dirty how-tos to actually make it work. Is it easier or hardier to sync if you do it manually?
Dell laptop. Win XP Pro. 40GB iPod. iTunes. Music files on an external Firewire drive connected through a Firewire hub.

When your iPod is plugged in, in iTunes, click the little iPod icon on the botton right, then there will be an option for deselcting auto sync.

But what do I do to actually sync? I know how to switch between automatic and manual, but I don't know how to tell it what I want to sync and then start the actual sync.

You are after the same thing I am...the ability to trigger a synch manually. Synchronization means a full copy of the library contents to the pod. Any other way to get music to the pod means dragging it to the iPod. I don't like that and I think it's unsafe.

It seems to me that a useful addition to iTunes would be a "Sync Now" button on the GUI. The problem with the current method of syncing is that Ipod has to be mounted to access the menu, and if you simply want to switch from autosync to manual sync in the menu...oops...too late, autosync is off and running. Anyone else have a view on this?

That's exactly right. Even if you can use a Playlist as a workaround, why workaround. The function should exist on its own. It makes things safer all around.

Either:
1 - right click on your ipod's name in the source pane (far left) --> Update songs on "(YOUR_IPOD'S_NAME_HERE)"
2 - File --> Update songs on "(YOUR_IPOD'S_NAME_HERE)"

the "file update songs on IPOD" option is greyed out and not accesible. I can only drag and drop files for manually
