How can you see the songs in a playlist

If it's a "smart" playlist, then the search criteria you entered may not have come up with any results, and need to be adjusted, or you might have had Live Updating turned off. If it's a regular playlist, have you put any songs into it? You need to drag songs into the playlist for them to be entered into it. Are you saying you used to see songs in a playlist, and now you don't, or you never have?
