128 indeed, but some users are reporting slightly higher quality compared to if they ripped from the CD due to Apple apparently ripping from a higher quality source, I believe this is simply a placebo effect.

I ripped a song at 128k AAC myself, then bought the same song from iTunes. The iTunes song does sound better, about equal to the 160k AAC rip that I made of the same song. Most likely due to the fact that a) they have the high quality source recordings and b) they have much higher quality dedicated equipment to compress the files, as opposed to my cheapo CD-ROM and all-purpose home computer.

I think so in most cases. I believe they said somthing like "[we use source material] in some cases", I seriously doubt they've gone back and ripped 500,000 songs from studio source tapes. I think the vast majority come right off the same CDs you or I would use, though they may be using a modified encoder (?).
