Newbie Question

Some questions about iPods since I'm (hopefully!) getting one soon.

1. I might be getting a 20G ipod for $369. Good price?

2. I'm a Windows user w/ iTunes. I've tagged everything. When I hook up my iPod, will I be able to dictate what goes on the iPod from iTunes, or does it automatically sync up and take everything from iTunes and put it on the iPod?

3. Can I transfer CDs directly to the iPod? I don't have much space on my hard drive, so I don't want to have to transfer everything to MP3 on my hard drive from the CD and then put it onto the iPod.

4. I have a USB but no firewire. Firewire cards don't seem too pricey so I was considering getting one. What's the speed difference?

5. Will the iPod take the playlists from iTunes?

Thanks for any help you can provide, I hope to be an iPod owner soon :)

1. I think so.

2. iTunes allows you to either:
- auto-sync your entire library
- auto-sync your own choice of playlists and Smart Playlists
- sync manually
So essentially, you can take as much or as little control as you like.

3. Sorry, I don't know... There are certainly threads on this though.

4. USB is much slower than USB2. If you have USB2, you should get speeds which are within +/- 10% of Firewire.

5. Oh yes... OH yes.

Thanks a lot for the answers!

I don't think I have USB2. How would I find out if I do?

I have a Dell which I've had for over a year now. It has a USB plug-in up front (two of 'em) and one in the back, but I don't think it's USB2.

So if I don't have USB2, I'm guessing firewire is the way to go? I was leaning towards it anyways because of the charging factor.

You're welcome. :-)

Yeah - I'd choose Firewire, personally. You can check for USB vs USB2 via Control Panel > Device Manager, but the chances are that you don't have it. Firewire's very nice for this application, and the cards are inexpensive now. Enjoy!

Eek, I just realized that I posted this in the wrong forum.

Thanks for your help though.
