iTunes problem: major slowdown/lag

iTunes major slowdown

i have a fairly recent gateway laptop (450sl). (it has no trouble running diablo 2...heh.) and i have the most recent version of itunes.

i like itunes overall. but i am having a problem that is WRECKING my experience.

itunes will just slow down majorly...we're talking 10-20 second pauses.

i only have 1700 songs in my library.

is there a known fix?

iTunes may be adjusting the playback volume of each of your 1700 tracks, one at a time. This is quite resource-intensive - but it's a one-off process. If this is happening, you should see information to that effect in iTunes oval status window - it's safe to leave the program running overnight or whatever, if you'd like to get it out of the way.

Alternatively, you can switch off the feature by disabling "Sound Check" in Preferences.

It sounds like your laptop should have plenty of power to handle iTunes once this has finished.

"sound check" is off.

i appreciate the help--anything else i could look into?

Hmmm. You might like to try temporarily disabling any antivirus software, and generally shutting down as many processes as possible - it might be that one in particular is draining your resources. What processor and how much RAM do you have?

pentium M (1.6 ghz, centrino)
RAM 512mb
40gb HD
windows XP

Ok. That matches/exceeds my music computer's spec in all those areas, I also use XP, and I'm having no performance issues with iTunes, so it looks like there is another process draining your resources. Try eliminating as much as possible. Good luck!

PS. A good way to see what's significant is to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, go to the Processes tab and click the "CPU" column header to sort. You can then zap stuff from that dialogue and see what works.

wonder if it could be related to Symantec Antivirus.

i'll check your suggestion.

I have the exact same problem, same thign when i load itunes, it takes over a minute to come up, then when it does it lags, freezes, sometimes i cant un minimize it... this just started happening, i ran it fine for a few days. i have no spyware, no viruses, and my HD has just been defragged. i tried disabling Norton Antivirus, no change.

I am a Norton user and have had no issues with lag on either XP or 2000.

What kind of video card do you guys with a problem have?

It really has nothing to do with video cards, drivers and other software. The program is the most processor intensive I have seen outside of 3D graphics, and you need a beast of a computer to run it smoothly, full stop.

Has to do with something and its not resources. If it was strictly resources then machines like those described above and in other threads would have no issue with the app but yet they do.

Witchboy has a 1.6 proc with 512 MB RAM on a XP machine. I have it running just fine on a secondary machine my girlfriend use that has an 800 MHz proc and 512 MB's of ram. Zero lag except when resizing. The proc is never pinned at 80, 90 or 100 % like reported in all of the threads discussing this issue.

My W2K server is only for F&P, 700 MHz proc with 384 MB Ram. No lag at all under normal conditions.

There are people in some threads with have 2.6 proc's and a gig of ram where iTunes grounds there system to a halt.

If it was strictly a resource issue there wouldn?t be a discrepancy like there is between the specs that can run it on some machines but not others.

Personally I feel that even when it runs fine on my machines it take up too many resources for a music management app. So it could be coded better but I don?t think its issues are tied directly to resources.

Yeah, I understand, my 300MHz 128MB computer upstairs runs it pretty fine, but when you actually do something in iTunes, then it just slows to a crawl. It only flatlines my 800MHz computer when resizing, yuk. ( http://members.optusnet.com.au/ajpodnar/6.gif)

i hate that lagggggggg!!
it happens to me too...and its not because of other apps, or lack resources.
i think it's just not handling the syncing/recognition of the ipod as smoothly as it should.
when it's not syncing or updating or recongizing the ipod, it runs perfect and smooth.

arg. so what can i do?

# 15 Re: iTunes problem: major slowdown/lag
There's not much you can do. iTunes just hates your system. ;) . I have a 1.0 GHz 128MB Ram Computer, and it runs beautifully. I have about 1500 Songs. No Lag Whatsoever.

i love my ipod too.

but i hate this itunes problem.

i am plugging my usb cable into my laptop via a smaller adapter that came with my ipod.

not to sound like an idiot, but how do i know if i have usb 2? is this adapter firewire or usb2?

# 18 Re: iTunes problem: major slowdown/lag
Personally i don't have any major lag issues with iTunes, maybe a .5 - 1 second lag un-minimizing or loading, but nothing to bad. I read somewhere that because iTunes doesn't use the deafult winXP skins/skinning engine, and it skins itself, it is not offloading the graphics rendering to the gpu (graphics card), and it lets the cpu chug through everything. This could become a problem if screen resolution is too high, too many process are running, or a very demanding program is running (Anti-Virus/Ad-Aware/disk defragger...). Also, some people don't realize that even MS Excel uses a lot of resources if you have a lot of graphs, formulas, or have a ton of cells filled with information. All of these things should be checked before running iTunes, and you should try to run iTunes with little/no other programs/processes running, to see if that makes a difference.

hmm...makes no difference.

also, we're talking about 40 second 'pauses.'

certain people just seem to have this problem with itunes and i haven't seen any answers yet that solve the problem.

arg.

# 20 Re: iTunes problem: major slowdown/lag
witchboy...if your using a viao then that little adapter is a firewire adapter, and you can snoop around in your control panel for devices/hardware information to see exactly what it is

# 21 Re: iTunes problem: major slowdown/lag
i think it's a firewire adapter. (i called gateway.)

i am deleting my 1700 playlists to see if that helps.
