Syncing of files w/changed tags?
I've got myself a 40GB iPod this week (?330!) and I finally got my firewire card yesterday.
I've spent 2/3 evenings this week tagging/renaming all my albums (about 20GB in total) ready for use on the iPod. However, some have slipped through the net and are under differently spelled genres/artists etc and this really bugs me. I can easily use Tag & Rename to change this on my MP3s on my hard-drive as/when I notice these problems, but is there a way I can update this in iTunes without manually removing/re-adding the albums/artists/genres I've modified?
And then, how do I get them on the iPod without manually removing/re-adding the albums/arists/genres I've modified?
I understand that you can set iTunes to automatically sync but will this notice any changed tags/file names? Or will it just add the same files again thinking they're different?
Soooo many questions, I've looked at the FAQ on this (great) site and not found any answers as of yet. Apologies if I've missed the answer elsewhere.

try the following:
hide browser -> shows entire library
push and hold "Ctrl" on your keyboard
klick the checkbox of any song
your PC should now lag a bit and begin to check all songs for their tags and renew them
finished
works fine for me, you have to try it...

I will try that... but what about updating the tags on the iPod itself? Do I have to just wipe it and then re-send the entire collection? Or is there a way of re-syncing it so the modified tags are changed rather than all the files?

I'm still experimenting with that as well... :)
I got my iPod last thursday (2 days...) and still trying to figure out how the whole system works. I experienced, when changing the per-track-volume on single items in the library, iTunes just loads up the changed songs. I think this will work as well with changed tags, but I don't know if iTunes loads up songs which haven't been tag-changed inside iTunes, so to say: by another software.
I decided to let iTunes manage my music library and so I don't use another software for now.
what I do when adding new tracks: checking their tags, and I edit them if needed, then I put them in the iTunes music folder and let iTunes search for new media. if the files are correctly tagged iTunes will rename and rearrange them in the way I want it to do.
looking for a good tagger with freedb support? try mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de) (see on top for language change)

I am considering letting iTunes control my collection but I have my music spread accross several partitions and several folders, so I think it could be problematic.
At the moment I'm just trying to organise my collection as it stands, any new music I download will be tagged properly before it goes anywhere near the iPod.

iTunes should be just updating the iPod's database w/the corrected tag information--not reuploading the entire song. You have to be sure to change the tags in iTunes. You can't change the tags in an outside application and expect iTunes to know the song's been changed.
If iTunes works like MC9, it keeps a song ID for every tune in your library. That song ID is also kept in the iPod's database. When you change a tag, it just makes sure to update the values in the iPod's database for the corresponding song ID.
I've heard that some tags changes in iTunes aren't making it over to the iPod correctly. Not sure which ones. This is definitely a bug if this is true.
But the bottom line is: it should NOT be reuploading the entire song again, just changing the values in the iPod's database.

what I experienced: altering the volume of a track uploads the whole track again. this brings me two conclusions: 1. iTunes alters the file itself and not an entry in the database when setting sound check volumes and 2. I should try it today with editing some tags... hmm... your're all lucky, I have misspelled an interprete and saw it on the iPod on the road today, so I have to test this out, by editing some songs outside iTunes and have a look at what iTunes does, and the same with some songs inside iTunes... I'll post my results.
# 7 Re: Syncing of files w/changed tags?
it doesn't matter how you edit your tags, inside iTunes or with another prog, iTunes actually uploads the songs again, the whole track. again, two conclusions: 1. ashawley was wrong :D and 2. iTunes has a database of all songs etc. and doesn't really use it in conjuction with the iPod, useless...

All working fine now, the holding down CTRL key seems to refresh all the folders and then if you click to Upate the iPod it all syncs nicely.
One annoying niggle is the iPod places "De La Soul" among the L artists instead of the D artists. I assume this is because of some sort of language thing, similar to it Ignoring bands called "The..." and placing them on the 2nd world.
Anyways, all working fine now, thanks everyone :D .
