Question re importing cd

I have been slowly importing my cd collection into iTunes for my iPod. I was under the assumption that the default setting was AAC. Is that true? I have been selecting a whole cd prior to importing to change a genre and there is a button that says "convert entire selection to AAC"? Whats up with that? Have I done something wrong?

Never mind. Once I import the songs, and then go into the "Get Info" they are all AAC at 128.
