iTunes trick
Maybe you haven't noticed this but, you can't uncheck/check all the tracks. Well, messing around I found this:
In Windows: Press Ctrl and click on one of the checkboxes
In Mac: Not sure :\
I still don't know how to just uncheck selected songs :( Anyone else know?

apple click on the mac. Virtually every command that can be done on the mac in iTunes with the apple button can be done on windows with the control button.
Work around perhaps for your removing selected songs. click on all the songs you want to uncheck. Drag them in one swoop to a new playlist. Select the playlist and control click in there. Then you could delete the playlist.
Not the cleanest way, but may work for you.

Sometimes when you want to burn songs from a playlist (the only way I know how to do it) and I pick the whole album, and maybe I just want half of them. Or when I made the playlist it has 3-4 albums in it so when I try to burn, it will burn all of them, when I just want a selected few. :p Oh well, I'll keep messing around.

Well I'd say if you have a bunch of songs you want to deselect in a playlist in some ways it's "easier" to just click the checkbox of each one as you go... Any other way you have to select them all and then press a command to get them done. Extra step in a way, ne?
