My first cd in iTunes

OK, I just downloaded iTunes and inserted my first cd. In the snap of a finger, all the songs on the cd appeared in iTunes. Over on the far left, there is a column with default items such as "Library", "Radio", 60s music, Most played, etc. Also, the name of the cd that I just inserted also appears. How do you create an item similar to those above that you might call "Jazz" to drag the new cd into? In other words, I don't want every cd that I load to appear on its own in that left column. I would think that you could create items such as "Jazz", "Electronica", New Age, etc. to drag the cds into accordingly?

Just do the genres in the tags and you wont need to worry about that, it will do it automatically.

Actually that disk image of the CD will only stay there as long as the CD is inserted. Once you eject the CD the CD image will eject with it. To get the songs on the CD into the itunes library you will have to click on the import button after you have selected the CD.

The "default items" you speak of are the:
1. Library - This will hold all of your songs that are imported into itunes
2. Radio - This allows you to browse internet Radio Stations
3. 60s music - This is a default smart playlist to demonstrate iTunes smart playlist feature

What you want to do is make playlists. Now if you keep genre tags you can make smart playlists (under the file menu) that would get songs that match a certain genre, or you can just make static playlists (also found under file or by clicking the plus button in the lower right corner of the itunes windows)

Note that to do anything with songs from a CD in iTunes you must first import them.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Stu

Adam - could you be more specific? I don't understand what you mean.

P.S. - sitting here with my wife from Sydney and she can't believe that someone from Sydney just responded. Small world!

In the main window in iTunes, there are a bunch of columns. One of them will be called genre. To explain it, I took a screenshot.

Then select a song, right click and then click get info and then you can change the genre. You can also do this by selecting multiple songs if you hold down control and click on different songs.

Edit- Wow, 300 posts, that was quick! Say hi to your wife, where in Sydney was she from.

Bellevue Hill. She went to Kambala and graduated in 1981. We spend a couple of months there every year.

That was a big help from all of you that responded. When my iPod arrives, is there going to be some documentation on all of this stuff?

You are on the best source of documentation out there. The Lounge has a number of forums dealing with troubleshooting, software options and just general experience with the iPod. Check through the threads here when you have any questions and make sure to explore all the different forums.
