Keeping songs only on ipod

Is there a way I can delete the songs from itunes, but still have them on my ipod? I read in the little manual that it came with that every time you plug your ipod in it automatically updates with your itunes library. I don't want to keep all my cd's on my harddrive, but I still want to have them on my ipod. Any help would be much appreciated. And please explain it to me like I'm five b/c it took me 3 hours just to figure out how to transfer the songs from itunes to my ipod. THANKS :)

Yes, you can do this (turn off syncing) but there are dangers. You might want to take a look at this thread: http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11518

I read that forum before I posted and didn't really understand it. What are some of the dangers besides having to reload everything to my computer if something were to happen to my ipod? Thanks :)

Thanks :) No that's about it. If you have everything backed up, give it a try. I'm just not sure what happens if you ever want to move some new songs onto your iPod though (without resyncing everything).

there is no problem adding new songs without syncing - you just drag n drop them onto the ipod. best thing to do is create a to be sorted playlist on the ipod then add any new songs to it. then select the to be sorted playlist and put the song in any other desired playlist on the ipod - if that makes sense!
