playing an unchecked album

I have a smart playlists set up that consists of all my checked songs. My music library is larger than my iPod capacity, so I have the "Checked" playlist set up to sync w/ the iPod. Here is my dilemma:

What if I want to listen to an album in my library, but it isn't one of the checked albums? Since the songs aren't checked, it just plays the first song I select and that is it. I want it to play the whole album. I don't want to check the songs, because then they will be put on the playlist. And I would prefer not to have to check and then uncheck everytime I want to play an album. Is there any alternative?

I believe that the best iTunes answer I can think of would be to create a new playlist of the album you want to listen to.

If you're using your browse panes, grab the name of the album up in the top right pane, drag it into the white area of the "Source" list. It will pop all the songs into a new playlist and auto-title it "Artist - Album". Then just select your new playlist and hit the play button.

iTunes doesn't have a "Playing Now" area... you have to contiunally use playlists and smart playlist to give iTunes's playback engine a "source"

Think of it as using paper plates vs china. The china (a proper "Playing Now" area) gets washed (cleared) after each use and re-used; the paper plates (iTunes Playlists) get used for their purpose and then thrown out.

Oh yeah, I got analogy skillz!

But if the album isn't checked, this doesn't help. You still have to check the album or playlist for that matter to get it to play. Let's say a make a new playlist of an album that isn't checked. If I click on the playlist and hit play, nothing will happen. If I click one of the songs and hit play, it will play that song and then stop.

exactly...i've been wondering the same thing xanager. this seems really stupid. I feel that in a playlist, the checkmarks should not be tied to the checkmarks in the library. Someone the other day thought this was the way it worked, but it doesn't (at least not with this new release)

No kidding?

That's kind of weak. Makes the checkboxes unusable. I had thought that once your library got too big for your iPod, you could use the checkboxes to say what you do and don't want on your pod, much like you're suggesting. But if that means that you can't get a non-checked song to play in sequence... well... blah.

Still, good analogy, aye? Can a brother get an attaboy? ;) :D

attaboy c.c.r. ;)

Yeah, it sucks. On albums with no checks, I've been just checking them, playing them, and then unchecking them. I must say though, it really sucks if you have an album or playlist with just a few of them checked. You pretty much can't have a queue, because I don't have the time to check them all, uncheck them all, and then go back and check the individual ones. I especially hate the fact that you can't ctrl-click a number of songs and then just check those.
