Automatically adds songs to Library

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is there a way to keep ITunes from automatically adding songs you play to your Library?
When I delete a song from the library, it only clears it from the list and doesn't ask if I'd like to also delete the file from my computer. This means I've got to go looking for it... Sorry, but I'm lazy, and if MMJB can do it, I'm sure there must be a way to set up ITunes this way.

Overall, ITunes rocks.

Ok, I'm off like a prom dress...

Try this.

Before you click delete on the file in the library. Right click and pick "show song file" from the list. This will bring up a window with that file. Now click delete and then you can go to the window and delete the actual file.

That's the work around.

Cheers,

There is another way as well, but it means you need to let iTunes manage your music folder. Not a bad thing actually as long as you prefer managing and viewing your tunes to iTunes rather than looking through folders.

You can use the feature to "Let iTunes Manage My Music Folders" and also Consolidate which will copy your tunes to your iTunes folder.

Then, when you delete a song in iTunes it'll offer to delete it from your PC as well.

Ok, first, thanks stu. That will keep me from scambling through folders.
As for Adam's advice. I didn't check the "Copy Files to iTunes" option on the initial setup (doh!). So what I've got now, is a ton of music directly under My Music (including all the subfolders of albums I've ripped), and then the latest album rips under the iTumes folder itself.
I've had the "Let ITunes Manage..." option checked since my setup. SO, if at this point, I've seen the err of my ways, and I want to put everything under iTunes (to get the file delete 'offer'), what is the best way? I'm not sure I've got enough hard drive space to make a copy of everything under My Music and then go delete it. Plus, I've already got everything straightened out and organized (in iTunes anyway). Does the 'Consolidate Library' option under advanced simply MOVE everything?
I couldn't care less about dealing with the actual files or folder structure, so I'd like to straighten this out and just interface solely with iTunes.
Thanks for the help guys!

Consolidate will indeed just move all your music files to the itunes folder so there's no risk of runing short of HD space if your MP3s are already there. I personally did run into a problem when trying to consolidate: Itunes could not process the request and came back with an "unknown error 50" message. I posted a topic on that problem, hoping that someone can help. Good luck anyway

Consolidate library will COPY everything in your library to the itunes folder. I did not have enough room on my hard drive for two copies of all my songs so I removed a few artists from the library and then used the consolidate library feature. Next, I deleted the original files that I had just consolidated then I readded the artists that I had previously removed.

Note: It does not recopy anything that is already in the itunes folder, just file that are outside of the itunes folder.

Also make sure your tags are in good order before you do this because it renames the files from the tags. I had a few songs that had most of the info in the file name not the tags.
