another rating system question
If i automatically sync the ipod, and then manually change the ratings on some songs in the ipod, will it update the changed ratings on Itunes next time I go to sync, or will the original ratings I made on Itunes overwrite the manual changes i've made? I would test this myself, but for the moment I have auto sync off until they fix the transfer bug.

I believe that the intended behavior is for the ratings to be updated from your iPod to iTunes on the next sync.
I believe it has been working well for me but I haven?t gone out of my way to verify.
Has anyone had a different experience?

Whichever rating is newest, if you edit a rating on the iPod, then sych it will update on itunes
if you update a rating, then change it again in itunes, the itunes one will overwrite the ipod one...
its all about last accessed points, im pretty sure :)

Yes, the iPod will update ratings in iTunes. This only works with autosync on third-gen iPods (those with a dock connecter).

As some have pointed out in other threads "modified" date/times on files can be affected by more than just ratings.
So if it is last modified date I wonder if it differentiates between a change on a rating or any other change (essentially making sure if it updates a songs rating its because the rating it is going with is newest and not something else on the file which may have changed)
Example of where this could be a problem is in iTunes I have R.EM.?s Nightswimming track and it has a rating of 3.
I sync it to my 'Pod with that 3 and it happens to play again when I am in a particularly good mood and decide that Nightswimming makes me feels all warm and toasty inside so I up it to a 4.
Now before I sync my iPod with iTunes again and update the rating I remember the volume on the Nightswimming track seemed a bit low so I go in iTunes and run Sound Check on it. So now the file has technically last been modified in iTunes.
When I sync does the rating stay at 3 or go to 4?
Hmmm?
(BTW - I have to apologize, I ask long winded and confusing questions when watching the Yankees grinding out a tight game in the series, they just went up 2-1 in the 8th so if they hold on I promise to tone down my questions ;))

Yep, this is a great feature of iTunes/iPod, very useful to me.
If you update a song on the iPod, and THEN on iTunes, it keeps the newer rating too, it is amazing the small details that apple puts into this stuff.
