MM and Vpod are better than Itunes!
It was very interesting to try Itunes after all this time.
However the interface seems unnecessarily restrictive and cluttered compared to Musicmatch.
My only real gripe with MM was that it often wouldn't sync the long radio files that I frequently transfer to my Ipod. I had the same problem with Ephpod. It was a hellish business.
I was hoping that Itunes would be a good integrated solution; that it would tag and play my music library and transfer the songs.
However I've found that with Itunes you don't have much control over the songs and the interface, and when you have a big music collection it is difficult to sync ~at all~.
It's true that I liked the way Itunes re-organised my Mp3 folders. They are now much neater.
But I've decided to go back to MM for tagging and playing songs and to the remarkably nifty Vpod program for syncing.

Just goes to show how different people?s opinions are on different software. I may not think iTunes is everything I had hoped for but if I was going to pass up iTunes for any piece of software there would be a whole host of choice before MM even saw the light of day again.
But of course the whole idea behind a product like iPod is plenty of music combined with ease of use. If you feel MM helps you accomplish this then more power to you.
I compare iTunes to MC9 and MC9 won hands down. But, for me at least, iTunes didn't sink that low for me to look back to MM.

"cluttered compared to Musicmatch. "
You must define cluttered the opposite of what I do. LOL
Musicmatch is most definitely the most inferior software compared to anything. Very much cluttered as well.

so there are folks who have used / tried / installed both mmjb and itunes here? i have the following questions for you:
1. can i get a trial of itunes and install it side by side with mmjb for evaluation of features and function, or will it clobber my system: mmjb 8.0001.blabla, winxp, latest ipod software, etc. i have everything working now, and a large perfectally tagged library, thank you supertagging very much. but all i hear is itunes this and itunes that. and actually, i have little faith in mmjb, as it crashes a lot, and it also won't upgrade to 8.1, while at the same time there is no intelligent support at mmjb...just a lot of confusing emails that never address my problems. so, any hope out there? thanks so much, this is a great resource for me.

I am a big fan of Vpod too. The fastest syncing proggie out there and incredibly simple to use. With the addition of a few more features I could forget about Ephpod completely.

I can't BELIEVE that someone actually thinks Music Match Jukebox is better than iTunes. I could unnerstan if he said MC9 (i've tried it, it was NICE, but screwed up the playlists on my ipod) but MUSIC MATCH JUKEBOX??!?! You HAVE to be kidding me!
That HAS to be the CRAPPIEST piece of chit software I have EVER used. It constantly crashed, and more often than not, refused to even acknowledge that my ipod was attached to my computer. To top it off, if I decided to add any effects or boost the volume to any of my mp3s, transfer speeds dropped waaaay off the map. After discovering ephpod (which has NEVER CRASHED or screwed up my ipod, and, as a matter of fact, has managed to repair my ipod's database after MMJB screwed it up) I promptly threw MMJB the HELL OFFA MAH COMPUTAH! Piece of garbage...
I have now recently downloaded itunes, and it is my primary ipod music manager, but I still keep ephpod around. Ya never know....

depends on what you're using it for. Yes i think MM is terrible for syncing with ipod. However, I had used it for several years, and I do feel that for a music organizer, etc. (non-ipod) it is better than itunes. Watchfolders, ability to delete mp3's off the hard drive no matter where they are at (compare to this only being available in iTunes for the "itunes folder"). Making a playlist, you don't need to type in the genre that you'd like to limit to, just select from a checklist. Radio feature is better. Most important, the simple playing now queue. Much easier to double click a song in your library to add to the playing now queue as opposed to creating a "playing now" list and dragging songs over.
Syncing with the ipod sucks yes, but I never understood why people give MM a bad rap other than that.

Dude. I'm a Windows user and a Windows fan, but one thing Apple does right is simplicity. Redmond and its followers could learn a lot on that front. MusicMatch is anything but uncluttered or simple. From the moment I loaded it, I was shocked (and horrified) that Apple would ship software that unwieldy with a product as functional and beautifully simplistic as the iPod.
I just downloaded and started using iTunes today, but so far I'm impressed. It's a great interface, fairly intuitive (although it could use a bit more in the way of documentation), and it's even pretty to look at.

Exactly.
iTunes is a sweet app, and it really is simple and powerful, there are many features that most players don't have and they are really useful once you start using them.

People give MM too much grief here. Forget about using it to Sync with the Ipod because that just doesn't work very well but the Core of the program itself I find very good for organising music and tagging files.

loGan, you are right MM sux at ipod syncing. But it is *great* for adding album art, tagging multiple files at once, supertagging, tagging from file name, renaming files from tags, etc., etc. Most people dog MM based on the way it syncs the ipod. But don't listen to them, they just don't know. Use iTunes (or Ephpod) for syncing and use MM for tagging/organizing and you're guaranteed to be a happy camper.
# 13 Re: MM and Vpod are better than Itunes!
I agree ... what iTunes has going on for it is a great balance between feature and useability. That said Apple does have some way to go before having the best program. What I find especially annoying about iTunes is a complete lack of a "What's Playing Now" kinda thing where you can add tracks. If a start a track and enter a search which returns nothing then the playing will stop when the current track ends. Not great.
Also changes made outside of iTunes never get picked up. Really annoying if you tag a lot of files and want these changes added to iTunes. You have to reimport the files - not just that you actually have to remove the files from the library before doing so otherwise you get duplicate entries.

# 14 Re: MM and Vpod are better than Itunes!
The hole point of a library app like iTunes is you do your tagging in it. Why would you tag outside of it?
If you're answer is you dislike iTunes tagging capabilities, well, I agree with you.. but I'm just wondering if that's your reason.

Different people have different opinions. I several times tried MM and vpod and found the programs awful and not for me. I do not like when program tries something to do without my control. MM constantly crashed, didn't copy files with national characters in name, couldn't handle national characters in tags, so finally I removed it from all my computers. Needless to say that annoying ad about purchase some enhanced version of this program made me mad. From other side, iTunes looks like state of art, simple, well balanced, everything works in the way as I want.

well, if you are used to pain and suffering within interfaces, mmjb makes perfect sense. i actually like it, but i have not tried any other to be honest and i have been using pc for about 23 years now, so i am used to strange interfaces (i even understand OS2). but i just want to tag and then play music, with emphisis on playing music...and being a pchead and not a machead, i am a stickler about a 100% logical and correct database, and it seems that mmjb wins here, except for the double entry anomolie, of which i just encountered. but to fix the db, all i had to do was click format in ipod manager and then re-sync in mmjb. syncing takes just a FEW minutes for 700+ songs, and i have never had a problem there. eject works fine, contrary to reports. so mmjb MUST be able to sync correctly, cause if i can do it, doesn't that mean anyone can?
