Quicktime needed?

When I instlalled iTunes, I couldn't choose whether or not to install Quicktime. However, I never like installing something unless it is 100% necessary! Is there any reason why I need to keep it? Is it completely independent of iTunes? Seems strange that it is not an 'optional extra'!

Quicktime is what is needed to take advantage of listening to and encoding AAC files in itunes.
