The iPods Door is Open?

I purchased a 3rd Generation 20GB iPod about 4 weeks ago. Everything has been going perfect until I've dowloaded iTunes. When iTunes came out I formatted my iPod and planned on starting new, but now iTunes won't let me.

When I go to transfer songs to my ipod i get a message saying:

iTunes.exe - Drive Not Ready
The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive\device\harddisk1\DR3 and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed.

It gives me three choices

Cancel
Try Again
Continue

Whichever one I select iTunes freezes and I have to reboot.

I've searched the forums and have found that this has happened to others but the usual responses state that its MMJB's fault and to try Ephpod.

Has anyone else had this problem with iTunes?
What do I do?

Thanks,
Dan

Did you format it using windows or did you run the iPod updater?
Sounds like you need to run the 2.0.1 or 2.1 iPod updater to make sure your iPod is an iPod and not just an external HD.

I formated the iPod using windows.

Sounds like you need to run the 2.0.1 or 2.1 iPod updater to make sure your iPod is an iPod and not just an external HD.

I've just finished doing this and still the same problem. Now it even seems it's getting worse. Everytime I plug the iPod in through USB 2.0 iTunes freezes and I need to reboot.

I've reinstalled iTunes and still the same thing.

Any help would be appreciated,
Dan

Hi, it seems I'm experiencing the same problem as the rest of you. Someone please advise!

I have about 5.6GB worth of music in my Work iTunes Library on my Windows XP PC. I had 2.3 GB on my iPod (stored from my Home Windows XP PC). Today, I got the bright idea to update my ipod using the work PC - thereby deleting all my home PC tunes for those on my work PC. About 600 songs into the process I get the following error message:

iTunes.exe - Drive Not Ready: The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive/device/harddisk1/DRG and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed.

Any idea what the heck all this means and how to get it importing again? Thanks for your help/advice - Saku =)

BTW, I am using a dual USB 2.0 cable and firewire cable to charge my ipod at the same time. Haven't had a problem using this method to manually import data in the past - although I did receive the same error message if I tried to import too many songs at once (anywhere between 100+.

I think it is reading the iPod as a CD-Rom like device... but thats only a guess... I have no idea!

Did you guys try calling Apple?

I'm having exactly the same trouble...

After weeks of skipping songs and a randomly freezing iPod...and ultimately iTunes ceasing to recognize my iPod...I had no choice but to reformat. I removed and then reinstalled the latest versions of iTunes (4.6.0.15) and iPod Updater (2004-08-06) on my laptop and reformatted my iPod.

Everything seemed to have gone well until I attempted to transfer songs from iTunes back onto my iPod. After about 150 songs, the transfer stopped, iTunes froze and the error message 'iTunes.exe - Drive Not Ready' appeared. iTunes would not shut down and neither would Windows XP. I had to literally take out my laptop's battery to force a shut down.

I reformatted my iPod and tried again...with the same result. And again and again. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. iTunes freezes and the error message reappears on different songs each time, whether I attempt to transfer my whole collection, 100 songs, an album or even a single track.

There don't appear to be any old posts on this subject. Is this a problem with the latest versions of iTunes and/or iPod Updater?

To be honest I've been hugely disappointed with my 3G 20GB iPod and in particular, with the standard (i.e. virtual non-existence) of after sales service or support from Apple. I'm about 8 days away from the end of the 90 day warranty period and wondering whether I should send my iPod in for repair/replacement before it expires.

Any suggestions or words of sympathy/encouragement would be much appreciated...

I was frustrated to no end and decided to try a few things. Without going into specifics about my trials, I'll just share what worked for me.

1. I was using a non-Apple certified Dock Connector to USB 2.0 + Fireware cables. This WAS I believe the root of my problem.

2. I went to a local Apple store - purchased their cable - tried it in store and many times since and it worked fast and without a hiccup! Hallelujiah!

I think a non-Apple model is defective or not strong enough to carry the charge.

I was also told (by an Apple Store representative) that a 2.0 USB Port looks exactly like a 1.0 USB Port - and the only way to tell is to check with your manufacturer's specs for your computer. Because the "freezing" we experienced could also be just a really slow and long lag time for the slower port to connect and make the transfer.

However, if you know that neither of the above issues are yours - then DEFINITELY send it into Apple BEFORE your warranty expires! I would even do it anyway - b/c it's your last shot to make sure everything's okay before you have to pay for the check up.

I hope this info helps - Saku =)

# 9 Re: The iPods Door is Open?
I have a 3g 20gig.

I too have all these door problems, "Door is open" and then the options: Cancel, Retry Continue.

I have tried reforting more than once, moving my 13 gigs of music to another computer to use a USB 2 connection instead of the USB1 in my old machine. I have also updated the software more than four or five times.

In all these restarts I have finally noticed a pattern. It gives the evil door message at about 12 gigs. As it fills up, everything is great but as when it hits about 11.75 or so it gives the door message.

Please help b4 I sell this thing.

Ok,
1) If you are having the freezing up when ripping cd's it is usually caused by not enough ram. XP sp2 needs at least 256 megs of ram. But, it needs more if you have an anti virus program, internet protection program, or any other program that uses memory. Read that as any other program. 3/4 gig is probably minimum for smooth sailing with cd ripping and ipod data transfers.
2) If your system freezes or you get the disk full message (or open door) while loading music from the pc to your ipod it is most likely your mode of data transfer or os, not the ipod. The updated ipod software or the upgraded xp sp2 has created a situation, in my opinion only, where usb 1.1 ports are no longer useable. 2.0 might not be adequate. And only via chipset firewire ports are adequate. I am experimenting and will have more data in the next few days. I think the solution will be: a) At least 3/4 of a gig of ram; and b) A via chipset firewire with updated drivers. Remember the old computer saying: Improvements often aren't.

# 11 Re: The iPods Door is Open?
The Ram and Firewire points are good but I am still concerned because my ipod only gives trouble at 11gigs. Up till then it's fine. After 11 gigs Itunes gives me the "door is open" message, freezes or deletes all the music on my ipod. I am left with the feeling that ipod just doesn't like PCs and am thinking of selling it to buy a more PC-friendly product.

Hmmm, sounds like a virus or a bug...

But, you are running Windows... Not Surprised...

Good news everyone! I had this problem and I tried many things to fix it including upgrade, restore, reformat and removing and reinstalling iPod and iTunes software. I finally took my iPod to the Apple store for diagnostics and I just found out that there is a problem with my iPod. I have the Apple Protection Program so they are going to give me a brand-spanking-new iPod.

If you have this problem and you are still within the warranty period or the Protection Program period, I highly recommend that you take you iPod to your nearest Apple store. They run the diagnostics overnight, so you only have to give up your precious iPod for 24 hours max.

Good luck!
