Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
If you sync your empty iPod with iTunes, iTunes will put all your songs into one or two folders, instead of spreading them thru iPod's 20 folders.
This causes major song skippage...
And tonight Apple finally acknowledged the problem
Apple's answer:
C_Squared,
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. We are looking into this and will post an update in this thread when it is available.

Yes I saw this a second ago. I am excited that they finally are looking into it. I have been screaming about it all over their forums. Hopefully they will see their error and correct it. It should be a simple fix. Itunes syncing is just so much cooler with the dynamic playlists and all and I really want to use Itunes.
# 2 Re: Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
yeah, I feel the same way...
I also filled their forums about this, but it seemed to keep getting overlooked...
go figure..
iTunes smart playlists are indeed very cool
I'm staying awake just rating and playing my songs (randomly), to "feed" the smart playlists... heheh

Definitely an important update. Keep us posted if Apple does make an effort at a response.
Chances are in a few weeks we will see an update to iTunes to work out some of the bugs. I am not too concerned as I believe that Apple will absolutely address this issue as it is not a functionality request but rather a fix.
Like with the 2.0 firmware Apple does appear to listen to most issues and provide a resolution, it?s their added functionality in the way of EQ improvement or, for older gens, OTG playlists that Apple tends to drag their feet a bit.

My iPOD synced fine with ephpod, and quite well with MusicMatch. iTunes - disaster.
Constant crashing led me to restore my iPOD to factory settings. Then trying to put music back led to it crashing again after 7-800mb. I read the stuff on various forums about flawed mp3s, but it seems to crash on different files each time, some of which it has previously synced OK. Even one album's worth at a time seems to upset it.
Oh, and when it crashes you can't unmount the iPOD OR close iTunes in the task manager.
Whatdya think?
# 5 Re: Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
I had major problems with ITunes crashing and taking down my IPod everytime I tried to alter a ID3 tag.
After many restores of my IPod I solved the problem by removing and then reinstalling ITunes. It's been perfect ever since... I'm not saying it'll fix your problems but it has to be worth a try.

I've reinstalled several times to no avail. Editing ID3s doesn't appear to be a problem with iTunes for me.
It just sticks while 'updating' -- and I can hear the iPOD drive making a repeated 'accessing' noise. I'm convinced its something to do with the file structure on the pod.

This is one I haven't encountered but others surely have reported crashing with iTunes. So far at least crashing is not on my list of issues with iTunes.

I'll be waiting for this update as well.

# 9 Re: Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
I've seen this transfer bug on my brand new iPod too - for me it especially seems to affect the first track on a playlist.
# 10 Re: Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
Add me to the list... most of my 8GB is in one or two folders, with a few songs dispersed across 3 or 4 more folders.
Also, isn't iTunes supposed to rename them to 23415.mp3 or a similarly short, numeric filename on the iPod? Cause it's not! >:-|

# 11 Re: Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
Your right azdude, its supposed to name it with numbers. Is it any coincidence that Ephpod, MC9, and Anapod all use numbers instead of the name? I think not. This is obviously the preferred method of transferring songs. I'm still very confused how this slipped by Apple, who supposedly knows iPod the best out of everyone.
# 12 Re: Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
The renaming thing was to get around a different bug in the iPod where it would skip over any tune w/a foreign character in the file name (accents, umlauts, etc). As a precaution, everything gets renamed to prevent this bug from occurring.
Apple might have gotten around this by removing these characters from any files it copies over but preserving the file name.
Me, I think it's silly to leave the file name as is. I mean, it's not used or even viewed by anything other than the iPod's database..so change it.
Sometimes I wonder if 3 Party developers know Apple's product better than they do. ;)
I know we loungers do! :D

I'm think iTunes should rename the file too but there is some advantage for leaving the file name as on the PC too, at least you can copy the songs with Human readable file name from iPod to PC without iPod specific software.
Consider this possibility:
- iPod SW 2.1 may not have performance problem reading long file name. (I really suspect this)
- iTunes 4.1 might already rename the file a little bit to avoid problematic charactors.
But for the sync folder bug, I'm quite sure that it's a bug.
# 14 Re: Apple finally answers regarding iTunes-> iPod tranfer bug
2 Questions. Why should the number of files in a folder cause the iPod to skip the first song of a list and why should long filenames cause a significant decrease in performance? Shouldn't these things be fixed in the iPod software rather than the desktop software? Or were these attempts to make life harder for 3rd party developers? I've noticed that the alarm feature on my 30 GB iPod works reasonably (though not without some bugs) well when I sync with iTunes but sporatically if at all when I sync with MC9 or Xplay. So clearly there's something about the file structure that affects the alarm function, though I can't figure out why it should...

Hi Guys, update on the Apple site
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?14@166.69FOaV5Iizt.0@.599adaee/18
Version 4.1.1 resolved this
Bad news is that you must install v4.1.1 of iTune, "restore" the iPod with the 2.1 updater & then sync again.
You WILL loose all the music and settings on your iPod, be warned. I agree with Adam, strange that MC9 was developed better!!!!!!
