AAC to MP3.. how lossy?

Sorry if this has been asked.. I tried doing a search, but the search engine didn't like me using keywords of 3 letters or less.

Anyway, I've read that converting from AAC to MP3 is lossy. Doesn't the destination bitrate matter? What if I convert to 192Kbps MP3? Exactly how many bps is the AAC format iTunes uses?

128Kbps I believe.

The destination bitrate matters, but in relation to the source bitrate. i.e. you're gonna be much better off if you're going from 320Kbps AAC to 192Kbps MP3 than from 128Kbps AAC to 192Kbps MP3.

You would lose very little if you convert 128 AAC to 192 MP3. It wouldn't be losing any information on purpose. If you pour water from one glass to another, you are going to lose water, its a fact, and its the same deal here.

It really angers me when I see 20 people here saying "how to I convert to AAC, to gain quality and save space", luckily your not on the same boat ;)

So yeah, if your using the music store, go to 192 MP3 and you should lose very little.

Gain quality and save space?! :D I know the AAC format is better. But MP3 is more standard.. and I'd like the freedom of being able to use other players than iTunes. I like Windows Media Player 9, which doesn't support AAC format.
