I searched... but heres my error "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created"

I can get one user on my machine to operate perfect in iTunes however the other user receives two errors.

I have:
- installed
- uninstalled
- reinstall
- created the folder myself
- editted the registry

Here's the error message(s):

"The folder iTunes cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "Music" folder."

and then one time I got this:

"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-50)."

I am a Mac user but have to use PCs at work. So I know both environments. I would like to figure this out without a system flush.

That's what I figured...

I suspect that at one time I used PowerTools to relocate the "My Music" folder - hence the reason to set it back and then further check the registry.

It's ok, this laptop has been running slow and needs to be refreshed.

I'll wait for a couple more replies.

I had this problem on a machine with Windows XP Home Edition. I was able to get it working after deleting the folder Apple creates under the path:
C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Application Data

The folder that contains the settings is named Apple Computer. If you delete this folder, it will ask you to find your music again. I am not sure what results you will get with the user that has a functioning iTunes, but it should stop the error that comes up.

Thank you...

The Mac store genius suggested that I uninstall and reinstall iTunes which obviously did nothing. No sweat though as they are not PC folks.

I actually, had to take it a step higher... after the recreated apple computers folder still generated the same error, I had to run the iPod updater and just clear it out.

I see that many people have been having the same Issue. I have a client that hired me to resolve this problem and it took a while to figure it out. There is indeed an answer - see See this link (http://www.brightsolutions.com/wagora/w-agora/view.php?site=bs&bn=bs_software&key=1109784889&first=1109784889&last=1022869176)

I have managed to solve this one with the help from another board.

Click on Start
Clin on Run
Type in "regedit" Enter

Do this step twice as there are two locations.
CTRL F
Type in "My Music"
Double Click and enter the path for where the folder is located.

Then exit.

It should now work.

The find I suggested before my have been a bit misleading as I guess it depends where you start from.

The exact locations of the 2 entries that I changed are

hkey_current_user - software - microsoft - windows - current version - explorer - shell folders

and

as above - windows - current version - explorer - USER shell folders

Try changing the two items from there - if these have already been changed then I'm not sure what to suggest.

nrendle -- I found this page looking for a solution to this error... your explanation worked perfectly for me (using a PC with Windows XP SP2)

Hi, I am having the same issue and I am getting really aggravated.

nrendle, I am a little confused about your solution.

Excuse me if I sound stupid, but, I don't understand what I'm supposed to do in the Registry Editor to change the location of the My Music folder.

you said "Double Click and enter the path for where the folder is located.", but I don't know what that means.

your help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and also, I don't seem to have any "Shell Folders".

the path I have matches yours up until "windows - current version", then it goes "policies - explorer - system"

# 16 Re: I searched... but heres my error "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created"
This might help you. I was uncertain as well, but did this and it worked. I located the location of my iTunes folder (something like this - C:\Documents and Settings\"yourname"\My Documents\My Music\iTunes.

I copied it, and when I found the regedit location referred to, doubleclicked the location and pasted the path in there.

I hope I explained that clearly enough.

Enjoy!

I tired this and encounted a problem.... Under USER shell folders there is no My Music Folder for me to update the path. What should I do?

# 18 Re: I searched... but heres my error "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created"
In XP, iTunes creates a registry key Win2KMyMusicFolder with a data value of "My Music", that in some cases, iTunes is not able to correctly identify.

Go to Start -->Run -->regedit -->Edit -->Find-->Win2KMyMusicFolder and modify the value "My Music" for your complete data path i.e. (C:\Documents and Settings\majofa\My Documents\My Music

This has worked in every case

Doing those steps allowed me to open iTunes again, but my music is all gone. Is there a way to recover?

I'm terrible with computers, I wish someone could walk me through this :( any way to get a step by step...for real novices like me, I'm willing to pay someone who lives in Boston for their time to help me with this. I'm miserable.....

I have my "My Documents" folder (& subsequently my My Music folder) located on an external drive. I had disconnected that drive earlier and forgot to reconnect it. I got the error message you described until I reconnected, and then...voila! No problems. Hopefully that'll help someone who may be getting the message for that reason.

# 25 Re: I searched... but heres my error "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created"
Subject: One more small step to try.

I tried the steps in Posts # 4 & 9 & 11. It didn't work for me at first... Then I noticed -- in "User Shell Folders", the Type for "My Music" was "REG_SZ" but everything else was "REG_EXPAND_SZ". I couldn't figure out how to change the Type, so I just deleted the "My Music" item. (Again, this is within "User Shell Folders" -- not "Shell Folders".) And then I also had to delete the "Apple Computer" folder again (Post #4)... And THAT finally did the trick! I was able to finish the install of iTunes, and it runs fine. (I forget if I had to log out and login or not.)

This is one extra step you might try if nothing else has worked. If anyone out there has super Registry knowledge, I'm curious as to why this final step made a difference -- and more importantly --> please let me and other forum readers know if there is anything unsafe about this (ie, deleting "My Music" under "User Shell Folders").

MANY THANKS to SylentMyke and those who figured out these remedies! MANY THANKS nrendle for finding & posting the info! I hope my addition helps someone else.

Hopefully future versions of iTunes might somehow avoid this problem altogether -- without introducing new problems! (How's that for WISHFUL THINKING! Ha-ha!)
