The Honeymoon Is Over! What Say You?
OK, now that the honeymoon is over folk...what say you about iTunes? I know I feel like the day after the Millenium...

I had the good fortune of using iTunes for Mac very frequently before it came out for Windows. I spend most of my iPod time on my partner's Mac.
That said, I got a great deal of pleasure out of finally being able to use iTunes on my XP machine (once I figured out how to be able to use my MiPod with it, see my reply on how to do that here (http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11768)). I had tried MC9, which had more features than I wanted or needed, and I liked XPlay but I missed my simple smartlists, play count and ratings so even though I'd bought XPlay, I still spent more time on the Mac than on my own computer.
The simplicity and ease of use with iTunes is wonderful to me. Being able to just click twice on an artist/genre/album field and edit while browsing my iPod is a feature I use constantly. It's streamlined and utilitarian without feeling too spartan, just what I was looking for. There are still features I would like to see implemented in further updates, such as auto updating the music library (though I don't mind just dragging and dropping my files) and being able to save on-the-go playlists with manual synching checked but I still think it's the best program out there for me and my iPod. I worried it would be an 'iTunes lite', but the crossover was well done. It's the program I know and love. It does just what I want and need without a problem.
I'm listening to Herbie Hancock's celebrity playlist now marvelling at being able to acquire it in just minutes. Even with my walking pneumonia and fever, it was a breeze to take care of, which I think is quite telling.

It simply doesn't want to see my CD drives... I own an iPod and would love to be able to rip all my music collection to AAC, but no. Can't rip, can't encode, can't burn CDs... iTunes feels feels like nothing but an unfinished product. A media software that wants to come compete on the Windows side against RealOne, Media Center 9, Windows Media Player, and yet can't even recognize at least one of the 2 CD drives on 2 different computers (1 desktop and 1 Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop). The only thing that makes it not too bad is that I haven't had to pay for this software. On the other hand though, I feel somewhat cheated compared to the Apple computer users which owns a 3G iPod like I do. Mac users have a working iTunes with built-in support for AAC which is known as superior to regular MP3. Windows users who buy a iPod are provided with MusicMatch which is nothing compared to iTunes on a Mac machine and can't support AAC and can't connect to iTunes Music Store. Media Center 9 is the only Windows software I found to offer equivalent strength to iTunes and better encoding quality (LAME MP3 encoding). I am curious to see whether Apple will admit having forgot some serous bugs or if they'll keep quiet as if nothing ever happened!

I think, for a first effort, its great. But what will really matter is if apple sticks with it, and addresses some of the major issues (like the file distribution and naming issue on the ipod) quickly, and then the minor ones as time progresses.

PeinOmbre,
Same here. Before I uninstalled iTunes, I could even go to the CD in Windows Explorer, find a .CDA file, right-click > Open With > iTunes. Heh, iTunes would launch and absolutely nothing would happen.
I woulda liked to see an AAC file or two. Aww well.

Let's hope Apple is serious about getting Windows users leave all other media software for iTunes and that they'll quickly fix it and keep supporting it! :(

What could of been the "Best Windows App Ever" turned out to be the "Biggest Disappointment Ever!" Never having used Itunes on Mac, and believing all the hype, I was so excited to get Itunes. I downloaded it the minute it hit Apple's servers. Loaded it up, had no major problems. Then discovered Ipod file distribution bug. Completely ruined the experience for me. Apple obviously didn't do their homework, which is sad. There are hardly any advanced options at all for Itunes. Its the most basic program ever. If thats the best they can do I have totally lost all respect for Apple.

I was all set to use it for a week and make a decision then. The only problem with that was that iTunes wouldn't recognize my DVD player so I couldn't rip any CDs with it. That combined with the inability to replicate my MC9 smartlists (No sorting options etc) mean I have uninstalled it and am happy using MC9 again.
If I'd not used MC9 then I think I would be very impressed with iTunes, its a whole lot better than MMJB. After using MC9 for a while though it just can't match the functionality (although the UI is very nice, particularly the creation of smartlists).

What difference does the file distribution 'problem' make?
I didn't notice any difference between having all the music in the F00 dir or having it spread around in all the FXX dirs. I have about 6Gb of music on the pod, does that make any difference?

I am a little disapointed and have given up with it already. Some basic functionality just doesn't seem to be there along with some more sophisticated stuff which Windows users now take for granted given the array of solutions out there.
It is just not intuitive for me, for example can someone explain to me how to delete a song if for example I realise that I have a double in my computer music library? I'm boogered if I could figure it out. Right click gives no delete options.
Also for some reason every time I fire it up it wants to reload every song on my Ipod which is just plain enfuriating. This could be due to Esspens volume tweak but no other program I use has a problem with this.
Not to mention skipping tracks left right and centre.
So for the time being no joy. I'll go back to using my combination of Ivod, EphPod and Music match. Music match for sorting and tagging, EphPod for wiping, configuring and syncing and Ivod for double checking and uploading songs for the first time.

16 people are 'very satisfied' huh.
Great program in theory, unfortunately in practice there are many flaws. Every complaint posted in this forum is justified too simply on account of Jobs' declaring it the 'best Windows app ever'.

It should ask you whether you're sure you want to delete the file (there's a checkbox to turn off the confirmation in the future). If you are in a playlist, pressing Backspace by itself only deletes the reference to the song in the playlist, but if you hold down the Control key while pressing Backpace, it will delete the file(s). I think it's Control, it could be Alt :-/

You make it sound like adding so-called advanced features is somehow beyond Apple when in fact they have spent an amazing amount of effort reducing the number of things that people have to worry about, and with good reason.
Apple is going after the moms and kids on AOL with Windows on iTunes. They couldn't really care less about the advanced users because the advanced users can and do take care of themselves.
I will note that "the most basic program ever" will have the AOL using kids and moms paying for downloaded music, ripping from, and burning playlists to, CDs, using the MP4 format, sharing music collections on home LANs and sponteneously networked laptops, working with smart playlists and properly maintained metadata which some people may regard as worthy achievements in themselves.
So , if you thought Apple was going to produce something aimed at advanced users, then I can understand your disappointment, but you were woefully misinformed.
I'm also surprised that you ever *had* any respect for Apple in the first place if you consider their award-winning user interfaces to be the result of them being unable to either think of, or implement, 'advanced' features (that few people care about) to the detriment of other users.

For me, itunes just works, period. Which is much more that I can say about MMJB and my ipod. Not a single problem to report here. After purchasing a few songs from the music store, I have a new respect for Apple and their model for music distribution. Is it the greatest APP ever, hardly - but what do you want for free??
my two cents..
