Album Artwork ( Help!)

Well,

I love iTunes for Windows. It's so cool. I have a questoin tho. In Windows Media Player 9 you can see the Cover of the CD. If you don't have it you can click "Find Album Info" Well i have no pictures in iTunes. How do I get artwork so it shows up in My Music and The Little box in iTunes on the left bottom of the screen.( Pic below of little box)

What I am doing is going to AMG All Music Guide, hunting down the albums, and then you just drag and drop the image into that window. You can also to multi-song selects and do the drag/drop as well.

It's really simple, and really sweet. But also remember that iTunes will append your mp3 to add this file (it's not controlled by an outside source). So it will increase the file size depending the size of the artwork, but it will go with it forever.

Will the artwork show up on the iPod's screen?

not as of now.. i would think you would need a color screen for that.

the drag and drop makes it really easy too. no need to save the image, just drag it straight from the web window. i like the little touches like that

Another way is to use Internet Explorer and go to Amazon or some other site. When you find the picture you want to use, right-click on the image and select "Copy". Switch to itunes, right click on a track and Select Get Info. In the image tab, right-click on the empty area and select Paste. If you have more than one song from the same album, you can use the Next and Previous buttons at the bottom and just Paste in the image again.

Sounds complicated but once you do it a few times, it is fast and easy.

SO there is no way of doing an automatic update?

I need the album info for a couple of songs. There is a option when you right click on a song called "GET INFO" but it never seems to work.

The image files I have been using average from 5k to 30k, at most. While I am importing, I do a seach on Amazon.com for the album and there is an option on Amazon to "Enlarge Image" under the album. I just copy that image and then paste it into itunes. Remember, the image is embedded into the music file when you do this...

Itunes does not have a built in way, at the moment to get the artwork automatically from the internet. The Get Info option is for you to use to update the info on the file. Hopefully, an option will be added to do this, automatically...

...and this is supposed to be "the best app ever"? Please......when Apple produces an update/patch I'll give iTunes a try.

Well, do you remember using the early versions of Windows media player? I agree, this isn't the best windows app ever but for version 1, it's pretty darn good and does a lot of things right but it does need improvement...

it?s also possible over get info. for single tracks you can drag and drop into the artwork window or click on the add button. for multiple tracks you can drag and drop into the small artwork box in the getinfo pop up box (center right in that box). it?s easier to just drag and drop it into the box pictured (first post).
the artwork increases the size of every file because it?s linked to each file and not to the album. that?s something apple may want to work on, even tough the size increase is fairly minuscule compared to harddrive capacity nowdays. however it?s still an inefficient way of doing things.

After reading all the post about artwork and people saying how greart itunes is, I guess they forget when you use that old MM and rip a cd its gets album info and art work.No haveing to look here/copy/paste/and all that other crap. Yes so far itunes looks nice and works easy but MM also works and has a few nice features not present in itunes.I will wait awhile and get use to itunes before i put my pod up to it. After all i have my 1500 songs working fine.

BTW you'll find the highest resolution (largest) album art pix at www.buy.com and www.walmart.com. And for those Bjork fans out there you can get great high-res pix of front, back and liner notes from her site, www.bjork.com

# 18 Re: Album Artwork ( Help!)
This is weird... either ID3 TagIT is accessing the interent and downloading the art when I edit the tags...

or iTunes does it when you add a folder containing an album in mp3 format to the library. Cos I ripped using EAC, compressed using RazorLAME, tagged using ID3 tagIT and then added to the iTunes library and hey presto... some of the albums magically have art and composer info!

# 19 Re: Album Artwork ( Help!)
perhaps someone has already had this clearly obvious idea but... it would be cool when u add art for a whole album if itunes just stored the artwork image in the first song file, and the other songs on that album simply borrowed the image when playing/selected.

for example:

a 50kb image stored in a ten song album take up 500kb extra space am i right?

but if it was only in the first song it would obviously save you 450kb of space - with over 200 albums this would save you a lot of space.

get it?

this may be totally implausible for some computery technical reason but i dont have a clue so hey

guess this would be silly if u ever split up the album and put some files one place and some another. but then again, itunes could be automated to anticipate this problem as and when u come to it.

"the drag and drop makes it really easy too. no need to save the image, just drag it straight from the web window. i like the little touches like that"

this quote make me laugh. Like the last poster mentioned, MM does all this automatically. I made the switch from MM to itunes after hearing all the raves. It functions just fine (MM had no problems either) but lacks many really cool features that MM does have. What's with having to make a playlist to burn?!! I always thought Apple was very user friendly, but not in this case.

# 21 Re: Album Artwork ( Help!)
More importantly, iTunes only stores the art in iTunes!

So, if you take the file to any other player, it WON'T be there!! I learned this the hard way. I tag via TagN' Rename, and it doesn't show up there. Conversley, if you add the artwork via Tag N' Rename it DOES show up in iTunes and all other applications.

Make sure if you want the art to be on there forever, you add it via a different application.

Hope this helps

stark23x,

To put tracks in MM, all you have to do is double click on the songs to put them in the "burning engine". After that, you can rearrange the tracks however you like. Can't do that with itunes.

As far as the artwork, you're right, the quality is better in itunes, but you have to manually go get them. Not my idea of simplicity.

As far as smart playlists go, you can add "preferences" to MM in the options pulldown and rate songs in 5 different categories. You only have to do this once and it will always be an option. Then you can open MM auto dj and have it "pull" songs by many different categories, preference (ratings), and how many hours you want to hear music. Then auto dj goes and gets the number of songs according to your selections and randomly plays them up to the number of hours you instructed. While the music is playing, if you or guests want to hear one of the songs on the playlist that is not next up, all they have to do is drag and drop the song where they want it. Now that is a "smart" feature.

I'm not saying itunes sucks. I'm just saying I expected many more benefits to it than less.

# 23 Re: Album Artwork ( Help!)
I must agree--i am a longtime MMJB user, and new iPod user, and iTunes is not all it's cracked up to be. as an interface with the pod it's great, but as a jukebox, it certainly has its downsides.

the ripping speeds of MMJB are WAY (2-3x) faster than iTunes, there's the aforementioned album art issue, and for me the biggest problem (on iPod and iTunes), is not being able to just choose a bunch of songs to play. on MMJB, you just click on a bunch of songs and it will play them in that order--easy to change, or add any other songs. the smart playlists on iTunes are cool, but like someone else said, once made, you can't rearrange the songs! also, AAC is a good format, but it annoys me that i can't play the songs on other jukeboxes or edit them on a program like audacity...

apple still has a ways to go before iTunes is the "perfect" program many on this site would have you believe.

Sure you can, you just have to have the "index" column selected (that's the unlabeled one on the left that is just a number). If another column is selected, they'll be sorted by that criterion and it won't let you drag them into another order. After you have the songs you want, you might want to turn off Live Updating in the smart playlist Get Info box if you want to manually rearrange songs, so it doesn't modify what you've done.

I share concern that artworks take disk space, but can't be viewed on iPod. In this case it's a good to have a feature storing entire set of artworks in high resolution images once somewhere in database or retrieve them directly from Internet. I'd rather to store just small thumbnails size images in tag for quick reference only. I hope iTunes 5 will support such feature.

That partially solves the problem of "random" selection. The "index" column puts songs in order in which you put them in your playlist (not smart playlist). So you may end up with a bunch of songs by one band in a row. If you then push try to have the order randomly arrange the songs, you then cannot change order. It may not be that big of a deal, but it really keeps you from having all the functionality of MM. I'm sure Apple can fix this, but just doesn't get what's wrong.

The problem with the smartplaylists is it takes too long to go through all the criteria when you could just click on the songs you want to hear and choose the order in which you want to hear them. These are just ease of use features that could be improved upon.

Someone mentioned before that itunes was made out to be far superior over any other music applications, but I don't think the people making those statements really knew all that MM could do.

The BEST place i have found for getting the best res album artwork is here:

http://www.slothradio.com/covers/

you type in the artist / album and it searches amazon et al for the best res images and then displays them.

although it is an easy site to use, and it seems to find the stuff quick, the images (even at largest) are still MUCH smaller than Buy.com or walmart.com .
