iPod Question from newbie

Hello, Windows user here. I plan on purchasing an iPod soon, and have begun using iTunes. All of these AAC files are starting to fill up my hard drive (I have been ripping my cd collection to AAC). Now once I get my iPod and download all of these songs to the pod, could I theoretically delete them from my hard drive, however still listen to them when my pod is cradeled?

it will work but everyone here will tell u that u should have a backup of ur songs because portable devices dont have as good of a data security record compared to ur computer. so if u do this remember to have the songs burned to a cd or on a backup drive.

Pardon my stupidity here but I'm new to the iPod. It sounds to me like you CAN delete music from your computer after it is loaded up to the iPod, but NOT delete it from the iPod too. Is this right? I have loaded a huge collectioin of music up to my iPod but now I have a huge library of music on my hard drive and little or no free space. Can you explain to me how I can delet the music from my computer's hard drive to free up space but still keep the music on my iPod? Will I have to worry about the songs deleted from my computer disappearing on my iPod each time I connect the iPod to iTunes to upload a new song to the iPod?

Thanks very much!

You don't need to keep the tunes on your computer - but be sure to switch to manually managing tunes, instead of just synching, or you'll remove them from the iPod. For more on this topic, see the 'sticky' thread above, entitled "You DON'T need music on your PC...".

As others have said, it also pays to backup the digital copies onto a data CD or a second hard drive.

Thanks for the info. I'm having trouble finding the menu item to set so that manual management is done instead of automatic. Can you tell me where it is?

The control is only available when the iPod is mounted. One of the buttons down at the lower right of the window, if I recall correctly. So if you are currently set to synch everything automatically, then you should plug in the iPod before you delete anything, synch it one last time and then switch to manual control.

After that, you move tunes to the iPod by dragging them onto it in the 'Source' pane (when it is mounted).
