With iTunes Win this can be done.
I am using manual sync and on first load I saw all my music underneat a device called Ephpod (LOL) and was able to play those songs directly on the PC. This was working for songs that aren't on my hard disc anymore.

Otherwise I've added a smart playlist and checked ratings, playcounts etc all without hassle. It's even picked up euPod's volume settings.

I feel really lucky.
