Interesting, that didn't happen to me. Did you by any chance click on the "Consolidate Library" option? That would do it.

Unimport, then reimport.

Maybe you should not "Import", but just "Add Folder" if you dont have any playlists to import. That way you file layout will not be touched.

Worked for me anyway.

Hi Aspect,

Sorry you are having problems. Why don't you give us a run down of what steps you went through in the install and importation of your library. Tell us how it changed the layout of your tunes as well. Perhaps we can tell you HOW you ended up with doubles and HOW you can fix it. If you react with frustration and give up you could easily miss out on a great program. Take a step back, a deep breath, and maybe a solution can be found.

Cheers,
Stu

Could using Import as Adam suggested be the problem?

I added three separate folders with thousands of songs and not a problem yet to report.

Like studog said let us know how you set it up.

Thanks

I just dragged my music folder into the song area and all the songs 'moved' over without trouble. I couldn't get the 'Import' to work

Only thing I need to know, is it just adding the location of the song, or copying it over into a new iTunes music folder. Because I have all my music across a network on another PC.

(Haven't looked yet, only just installed it.)

Why not just go to File -> Add Folder. This does what you are trying to do. Importing is not necessary and sounds like it does more harm than good.

Because I checked the 'Help' first and it said 'drag and drop', which is easier I think. :)

Just re-read 'Help':

By default, iTunes places a pointer to the file in the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder in your My Music folder (in your My Documents folder); the original file is not moved

Sorted :)

I too will recomend you not use the auto import, and insted go and use the "add folder" function. I chose one folder containing somewhere around 8 gigs of music (in various sub folders) and had no problem with itunes at all. No crash, and everything showed up.

hahaha, why would you give up so fast? It's new software and it's gonna take a little to get used to it and set up everything how you like it. Geez.

In iTunes preferences, look under the Advanced tab to see if "keep itunes music folder organized" is checked. That feature organizes your music folder to the itunes default (Artist-->Album-->Song). Deselect this feature, and you can use your own system to organize your music.

Hope this helps.

How do you readd the library?

By selecting library in the source window of iTunes you will get a listing of all your songs that have been put into itunes. You can select view options to choose which tags appear in the library window. You can then choose how to sort the songs by album, length, artist, song, etc. Up or down.

Another powerful tool to look at your music library is the browse function. Click on browse in the upper right corner and you can select and look at songs just like on the ipod.

Of course most of the Mac community is going to say it is worth it and that you aren't seeing something. Listen to all the good comments (see itunes rules thread). Now I'm not saying you can't be happy with something else. What is best about itunes is that it was MADE to sync and manage your tunes onto the ipod. Don't give up on itunes until you have used it with your ipod. That would be my opinion.

Maybe you can try out itunes with a smaller selection of your music library to see it's power?

Good luck,
Stu

Edit->Preferences->Advanced.

De-select "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy music to iTunes music folder when adding to library".

This will allow you to keep your pre-existing file structure intact when adding songs to the iTunes database.

Is there anyway to "un####" the damage that Itunes has done to my directory structure? I have in excess of 4000 songs, I had them in a logical order that it seemingly didn't agree with, so it made almost as many folders, for each song!!! #### I hate apple...

I know that realistically, there is no way to undo that, however, is there a way to change the filename setup. Previously I had my filenames setup to read almost like the ID3 tag. Mine was setup like this.

artist - song title.mp3

and this program saw fit to change everything to this

song title.mp3
(artist , album)

There has to be a way to change that.

Just get a good tag editor (tag&rename, id3-tagit) and use their rename files from tags features.

Assuming your tunes were tagged well, you should be in good shape.

You can create whatever folder structure you like.

Personally, if you can make the change, you'll probably find that living outside of the "folder" world and using a Media Management tool/library (e.g. iTunes) is a much quicker/logical way to access your tunes.
