iTunes for Windows not supported for WinME?

Folks,
I know, I know. Change to W2K or WinXP. I probably will, but until I do, it's a bit frustrating to find out that even though WinPod is supported on WinME, iTunes for Windows is not supported on WinME. At least according to the information on the Apple iTunes web page.

Does anyone here have WinME, an iPod for Windows, and has attempted to D/L and run iTunes for Windows on a WinME machine?

FWIW, I have a Sony VAIO 1.3GHz P4, 60GB HD, 512MB RAM, built-in firewire (2 ports: one 4-pin, one 6-pin).

I have been able to use MMJB and Audible with my 3G 30GB iPod with no problems (once I figured out iPodManager was best left unloaded :).

Anyone care to chime in?

Thanks,
Jerry

The installer is pretty much build for 2K and later, so I doubt you'll be able to get it working w/o a lot of hacking, if possible at all.

I hear ya! I was so ticked when I downloaded the program for an hour on a dialup only to find it couldnn't be installed on ME! I know I should have noticed on the download page but it didn't even cross my mind that it wouldn't work. Bummer for me. Can't just buy xp cuz of itunes, have to wait till I upgrade my computer to eventually.

Your computer could very easily run WinXP, why not just go for it now?

With all due respect, ME sucked, really hard. Microsoft all but admitted that. I would not want to be running ME even if you could run iTunes on it.

ME was the worst operating system ever.

Luckily XP is Microsofts best operating system ever.

Without further adue, switch to XP.

One simple reason for not getting xp right now. $$$$$$$ After an ipod a xin amp and ety er4p headphones...it's just not in the budget right now. As far as crap with M.E I don't know any different. I got my first computer at 35 years old in 2000 so M.E is all I know, if it sucks..I don't know any different so for me it really doesn't suck.

I read this forum and went to Apple and then noticed that in the requirements. I guess I'll stick with Ephpod since it is not in my budget right now either - too many other things on the wish list and if the current methods ain't broke then don't fix it. I am still somewhat new to my iPod and do not really mess with playlists and what not (I have a Gen2). So I am not that interested in iTunes yet. If my Gen2 breaks and I get a Gen3 then things may change.
Soooo many people say to get rid of Me but it has not been that bad and I have so many peripherals that I do not want to spend a day downloading new drivers. Maybe on the next break from classes and after Santa brings me a disc with Xp on it - just joking.

I agree with the sentiment that the desire to run one particular application should not be the reason to upgrade the OS.

I further agree that:
1) WinME has a bad reputation.
2) My particular WinME experience has been pretty good. I have a wireless network, run all sorts of apps, and rarely have had any problems.
3) BUT in the last 3 weeks, after finally breaking down and patching WinME, IE, and OE to the most current levels, I have been having lots of BSOD problems. IE crashes or hangs constantly.

After having tried for weeks to fix item 3) above, I have resigned myself to upgrading to WinXP anyway (IE and OE are hideously linked under the hood in WinME, and attempts to repair or revert back have failed).

So, the iTunes is the straw, and now I'm just debating between XP Home or Pro.

Later,
Jerry
