iTunes wont play my cds
When I start iTunes, here's the message I get:
Warning!
The iTunes service for importing and burning CDs and DVDs has not been started. Please restart the service to enable burning and importing.
It looks like an installation setup window with a button that says "Finish" at the bottom. Click on that and iTunes opens but I can't listen to CDs. I close out, restart iTunes and get the same message. I've tried re-installing iTunes, but to no avail. This is for my computer at work and it doesn't have a CD burner -- could this be the problem?

Did you check the "Yes, I would like to restart your computer" box before you hit finished. If you checked no, then my guess is that is your problem. Your best bet would be to uninstall iTunes, reinstall iTunes and make sure to restart yout computer. Also make sure you are using WinXP/Win2000 SP4

Yes, I checked the restart button and restarted my computer. Doesn't recognize CDs.

But I then shut down everything, went to the control panel and did an add/remove iTunes. I then selected repair (I think that is what it was called).
iTunes went through the install again, I selected reboot. PC rebooted, everything is grand!
Try that...

the service is "gearsec.exe" - i think that it may be the reboot issue - did you run iTunes before you rebooted? Might want to reinstall.

I could not get iTunes to recognize the CD-RW or DVD-RW drives on my Windows PC (a Dell). The problem was with gearsec.exe not recognizing my drives. I went to the GEAR website, and updated the drivers:
ftp://downloads.gearsoftware.com/pub/updates/windows/win32/drivers/Driver_Installer.exe
Now everything seems to work fine.
