Itunes not importing id3 tags correctly

So i went ot the announcement speech(w00t chicago) and i immediately ran back and downloaded itunes. it rules.. however i can't import my library - cuz it fuxors up the id3 tags. it appears that if i import a directory with more than one subdirectory it won't import the artist tag from the mp3s in any of the subdirectories after the first one. this is lame. i don't want to have to retag 50g+ of mp3s.. and doing it a dir at a time is a drag..

so far the only work around i see is to import each dir at a time.. suxor..

it is pretty fast. the store seems to work.. the translation from mac to pc seems to work..

now i gotta get my ipod hooked up. ;)

I know that this isn't directly responsive, but I didn't want a hundred tagging threads here, so:

IS there a way to just get itunes to look stuff up that you ALREADY have in your library on CDDB? It seems to be doing a great job of finding stuff that I am ripping, but I'd like to look up stuff that I already have for uniformity's sake.

I think I've gone through the help files pretty thoroughly...

TIA,

Justin

This may be a bit controversal but... I'm not that impressed with iTunes on my initial impressions. The Music store does seem pretty cool (although being in UK I can't buy yet:-( ) but even on my brief tour I found several artists such as Radiohead who were absent from the store.

But I digress, I have posted to this thread as my main gripe is that when I imported all my mp3s into iTunes it has managed to pick up the Artist and Albums OK but I have loads of "song title.mp3" song titles.

Which version of ID3 tags does iTunes look at? I think I have my mp3s pretty well tagged (I'm a bit anal about it) and every other media player has picked up every song fine. Ephpod for example is always spot on.

Anyone else had this problem?

so i ended up just importing my entire library(all tagged in id3 2.0.. works in all the others.. etc etc). and retagging everything. it was a pain in the ###. however now that everything is in itunes.. it rules. seriously awesome.. i don't see a lot of the problems som eof the other people are seeing. itunes store works great.. it imported all my singles great.. and it organizes everythign rather well(i didn't choose to reconsolidate my mp3s.. yet ;)). i am a bit worried about the extendability of the app.. but i guess we shall have to wait and see..

What app did you use to tag it? My wife has ripped most of her stuff via MusicMatch and the issue were having is similar - in the Edit->Options->Advanced, pointed the music directory to her other directory and iTunes will not import any of them. Now if I double-click on a song in Windows Explorer it will add itself to the iTunes music library app. Any ideas?

Just a quick update. I have to say that my opinion of iTunes is changing, I do quite like it now :D

My only gripe now is that the correct song title's do not display in the library view. I have now noticed that iTunes can read my tags fine, it is just that it doesn't seem to show them first time. What I mean is that if I go to Get Info on the file and then don't change anything but just close down the window the song name corrects itself!! Or if I just listen to the song it sorts itself out. Anyone else noticed this behaviour?

I can just do Get Info then click next through my entire media collection... but I dont really fancy that!! :)

If it sorted out the song titles as I copied the songs across to my iPod I wouldn't mind I could live with them displaying incorrectly in iTunes but when I synced with a smart playlist (very cool feature) it copied a song along with the title "03 Song name.mp3" when this already existed on my ipod (but obviously with the correct name).

Any advice appreciated :)

I have also had a problem with the artist name not being extracted from certain MP3's in my collection. But I found that if you select all those songs in iTunes, right-click on them, and select an option called "Convert ID3 tags" (or something like that), and then click on the first radio button and leave the combobox at "None" (I'm not exactly sure what it's doing here, I tried setting it at 1.0 and it also worked), and then hit OK, then it seems to pull out the artist names properly.
