Whats the skinny on xskin?
I need to buy a case relatively soon for my 3rd gen 20gb.
I was hoping to get one that would protect the screen as well as the buttons, while still letting me use the buttons.
It was hinted that the xskin will do this? Will it? When will it be available?
I don't care for those zip cases, it looks like you're keeping it in a sandwich baggie.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

# 1 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Lajo said the xSkn will be available sometime this week. He has not provided many details about the xSkn though, so I can't answer your other questions...just wait a few days!
# 2 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
I thought it was Nov. 1st when it was arriving and that it would cover the buttons and screen and wheel... personally I'd rather keep the buttons and wheel open, but maybe I'm just odd.
# 3 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
I don't want 'em to get dirty or wet.
Ok...fine, fine, so I'm a wuss.

I guess that's a good point... the wetness, that is. I mean if it was raining and I still wanted to drag my iPod out and listen to it I wouldn't want the buttons to get wet either I guess. I just don't like the feel of having to press through the material.
# 5 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
I have a feeling that even after buying 2 iSkins last week to add to the one I already had...I will be wanting the new xSkn when it comes out.

# 7 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
If it makes the hold button easier to access, I'm sold.
...and yes, I know I can just cut the one I have now.
# 8 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Yeah, I don't exactly plan on buying a ton of skins. Seems kind of silly. (I know some of you like to collect them, so hey, whatever floats it for you.)
I'm just impatient. :D If I could see the xskin now and decided I didn't like it, I'd go get an iSkin.

i see dead people?
# 12 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Here is what I think. I think that lajo is making the Xskn like the exo, but with tpu screen, button, and scroll pad protectors. This would make sence since lajo is extremely obsessed with silicon and tpu. Just my 2 cents. Peace
# 13 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
I'd also bet anything that it has a different method of connecting to the dock--perhaps something similar to the "hinged" bottoms that some of us have done.
# 14 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
hmmm i wonder if lajo's obsession with silicon and tpu has implications for his sex life? ;)
i would also like to see the xskn so i know if i'm getting that or the zip case...
# 15 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
ok, AptMunich...that's...wrong :p
# 16 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
I've seen that some people cut up their zip case and stick it under the iskin to cover the front of the pod.
I guess that's my fallback if I don't like the xskin, but I would imagine it slides around a bit and bunches up, no?

@mrogers: no "dual 19" LCDs " THAT's wrong...
i'm scratching up the pennies to get a flatscreen as i'm moving into a 1-room apartment with my girlfriend and deskspace is precious and you have 2 (!) 19" lcd's...Very cool my friend :-)!!
you don't really expect lajo only thinks of his customers all day long do you..
Maybe iskin is just his day job, maybe at night his pitch goes something like this:
"Oh yes,it feels VERY lifelike, all products are extremly well designed so your inventory doesn't slip out of your/her hands etc..."
all in good fun lajo, no insult intendeed!!
# 18 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Dual 19" LCD's you say?
What kind?
I have a Samsung 191t both at home and at work. Love it.

I am thinking about getting 2 17" samsungs with the small border.
# 20 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Good choice. Samsungs are great for dualing up because of that. Excellent contrast ratio and color reproduction too. Very little ghosting, great for games.
My work one runs on analog, and I use the DVI at home. Definately a huge difference. The auto settings for analog mode work perfectly though.
The 171n is the same as the 191t, only smaller and with a different stand.
Might want to check the native resolution, it's 1280X1024 on the 19"'s. That might make things too tiny on a 17".
The only problem is you'll have to go look up the settings for Adobe Gamma. The ones that ship in the drivers are wrong.

I've got 2 Dell 1901fp monitors, the guts of which are from a relatively high-end Planar monitor. The 1901fps are great; I've owned a number of LCDs, so I've learned what to look for. They have fast response times, no ghosting that I have ever been able to see while playing games or watching movies. The color saturation is definitely fantastic in these monitors, which is good because I do web/graphic design. The bezels are nice and thin, they rotate, they've got USB hubs and have multiple inputs. I have a dual DVI GeForce 4 Ti4600 in my main system, so both monitors have their DVIs going into that. Then one of them has its analog input going to my Linux server, and I can hit a button and it will switch over.
I have never noticed either of the two negatives that CNet mentions in their review ( http://reviews.cnet.com/4505-3174_7-30470404.html?tag=search ), it's possible they had a bad unit. And here's the best part about these monitors: if you wait for the right time, you can get them from Dell for about $460 each, like I did. That's DIRT cheap. Every once in awhile Dell has a 20% or 25% off sale on their monitors. Then I throw in a 10% off coupon I got either from a catalog or by email, and then I'm saving serious money. Plus, with the 30-day no-questions-asked money back guarantee, if there's even 1 dead pixel you can send the monitor back and get a different one. Most companies have something like a 5 or 8 dead pixel minimum before you can return a monitor. So, I'd highly recommend the 1901fp -- best bang for your buck, no doubt about it.
# 22 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
What has this got to do with the "xskn", go to the lounge to taslk about this; its confusing!
# 23 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Sorry, threadjacks happen. :D
Blame AptMunich. At least we're not flaming.
I thought Dell's 19"LCD"s were Samsung? I told my neighbor to order the one with his because it was the same. When he got it, sure enough it was. (No USB hub though.)

# 24 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Yeah, sorry about the threadjack, I've got to say one more thing though in response to palexc...
Dell gets their LCDs from LG, Samsung, and Planar. The 1900fp was Samsung, but when they updated to 1901fp they went to Planar. The popular 1800fp is made by LG.
ANYWAY... :D
It's now Thursday, and last Sunday Lajo said to watch for his xSkn release "later this week". Any day now...
I really am looking forward to it because while I love my iSkins, they have their limitations. I just received my iPod yesterday (finally), and my minor annoyances with the iSkin include:
-Having a separate piece for a screen protector makes it hard to line up and it doesn't looks as nice as one piece would
-Docking. Nuff said. The cutting solution is OK, but it could be better
-I'm having a strange problem with the "Next" button: if I touch the iSkin on the right side of the iPod, to the right of the next button, the button will activate, even though my finger is a good 1/4" away from the button
Despite that, I like the iSkin overall. I imagine I'll get an xSkn as well...or 2 or 3 ;)
# 25 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
You know,...
if you want to protect your iPod screen & you don't want to buy a new case with a built-in screen protector, you can just cut a square out of a PDA screen protector and stick it onto your Pod screen. I did this & it works great. Allows you to touch the scroll wheel while protecting the screen. It's totally invisable behind my iSkin case.
And it cost [me] nothing 'cuz I had an old pack of PDA screen protectors lying around.
Just a thought for fellow cheapskates...

Hey thanks moose, I hadn't thought of that.

# 27 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Yeah.. I use PDA protectors for lots of things. I just got a new cell recently, used the PDA protector for the screen.. it has kept my old (and now broken) archos unit free from scratches. Works great. I'm not sure why more haven't used then on their Ipods.

has anyone actually SEEN what these xSkins will look like, or are we asuming that they'll be pretty much like the iSkins?
# 31 Re: Whats the skinny on xskin?
Xskn announcement will be up in a day or so.
Xskn will provide a way for artistic individuals to get into the booming iPod case business by making limited edition and one of a kind art+Xskn cases.
