to buy, or not to buy: a few questions

As the clock counts down to christmas, i find myself craving an ipod... but im really not sure if its for me. Ive read lots of the testimonials of ipod greatness on this forum, and im pretty much convinced that if im going to get an mp3 player, the ipod is the one.
Im 16, and currently have about 1000 songs on my computer, and am looking at the 30 gb ipod ($399 on amazon). I would go for the smaller model, but the 10 doesnt have the dock, i cant find a good deal on the 15 (the 20 is priced the same as the 30, so yeah, thats out too)
Im concerned that i might not use the ipod enough to deserve something so costly- i will soon (February) if all goes to plan be getting my licence and a car. Will it be worth it to have an ipod and maybe an FM transmitter thingy as opposed to cd's in the car? Should i hold out to get the ipod as a birthday gift, hoping that 4g or lower prices will be avaliable by then?
Do the features of the ipod really outweigh the fact that one can get the nomad zen xtra with 60 gb, double the capacity, for the same price?
My friend has a 1g ipod, and i love it, thats what made me want to buy one in the first place, the body and interface is just awsome. Im just having trouble weighing the options. Any advice?
Thanks,
Jesse

I would suggest getting a 15gb if you could find a good deal, because in my opinion its the best bang for your buck, no matter what. With only 1000 songs though, you could really go with a smaller version, maybe going back to a 2g 10gb, or even as far back as a 5gb. If you look hard, you could find either one for around $150 US, so they are relatively cheap. Even though I'm only 15, I plan on using my iPod rather than cd's when I get my car in a few years, and even if you don't have the latest and greatest iPod, it will still serve its purpose - letting you take your 1000 songs with you wherever you go.
