Battery indicator and G3 20gig w/2.1 observation
If this has already been posted somewhere I apologize but I thought that other G3 owners would like to know...
I originally thought that my ipod was running low on battery power very quickly, say around 4-5 hours so I decided to do the test listed on the apple site and I noticed something really strange. My battery indicator dropped down to one line around 4-5 hours of play and then dropped to zero lines at around 6 hours of play time. It then continued to play for an additional 2+ hours for a total of 8+ hours of play time!
So for all those with new G3 ipods that think your ipod is out of power because the battery indicator says so...do the test yourself. It's located at the following link: Battery Test (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61475)

Yup, it is the wonderful battery meter Apple has graced us with under 2.1
Despite what you might consider to be important in a battery meter, accuracy and usability, Apple disagrees. Hence the poor excuse of a gauge they provided in 2.1
2.0.1 isn't perfect but I find it a bit better than 2.1

Interesting result - I've always been too lazy to do the actual test, but it's what I've suspected.
I've also had my ipod play for another hour or two in spite of a O power reading. It is extremely unreliable this battery meter.

yeah my battery meter usually stays on for a good hour once all 4 bars are depleted. One thing i couldn't stand about the 2.1 firmware was how the ipod would take a slong as 20 minutes sometimes just to display the "proper" battery charge

Yeah, hopefully Apple will fix this in the next update but I won't hold my breath waiting.

Rankinfile, what do you do on your iPod? Do you use the backlight or the games or switch tracks alot?
EDIT: "The album should play over and over until the battery is depleted.
Regardless of what the battery status indicator shows:
iPod (with Dock Connector) should play the album for approximately 8 hours.
iPod should play the album for approximately 10 hours."
DOes that mean you get less power when you use the dock with the AC adapter than just the AC adapter by itself?

Jack--
I think the 8 hours refers to the G3 iPods but I'm not sure. When I use the backlight and switch tracks or use EQ etc I get less than 8 hours battery time, more like 4-5. The more you do the less time you get... That being said, the best way to conserve the battery is to make playlists ahead of time, don't use the backlight or EQ, and then lock the ipod to prevent accidental usage. And the games will drain the battery extra quick. Hope this helps.

Actually, whenever my battery gauge is empty (2.1) the unit shuts down within 10 minutes or so.
