Hey, potential iPOD buyer looking for advice..

Hey, I've asked for a 20 GB iPOD for Christmas (I would settle for a 10 GB iPOD, but the 20 is a much better deal). Problem is, I've heard lots of things that are deterring me from buying one:

1) The battery life is horrid. Is this true? How does it stack up to, say, a sony Discman? I don't really care for the games, its all about the music for me... so how many hours would I get on average (full charge). (note: I tend to skip songs a lot, so that may drain the battery, no?)

2) My OS is Windows ME, which isn't very good. I would upgrade to XP, but I don't really have $200 to throw around. Is the iPOD compatible with ME? (iTUNES isn't for some odd reason).

3) I believe my computer has USB 1.1 (I checked the system specs, and it says USB, doesn't specify which version. I got the computer in Q4 2001, if that helps any). Exactly HOW long would it take to transfer, say... 3 GB of music?

3a) How much does a good Firewire or USB 2.0 card cost? Are there any in the $30 price range?

4) Is the blue backlight a random thing?

5) Does the iPOD play VBR files?

Thanks in advance for the help :)

1) The battery life is not terrible, but if you're looking for a music player for transcontinental flights the ipod is not for you. Also, you can always get the belkin battery pack.
In my experiences, the ipod's battery is exceptional.

2) The iPod is compatible with all versions of Windows, you just have to work around some things. You wouldn't be able to use iTunes on ME, but you can use XPlay and Ephpod, two very good programs.
XPlay Homepage (http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/)
Ephopd Homepage (http://www.ephpod.com/)
The only catch to using iPod with windows ME or 98 is that in order to upgrade you'd need to borrow a friend's computer with Windows XP or 2000.

3) I do not know exactly how long it would take to transfer songs with USB 1.1, but however long it is, it's too long. Most USB 2 and Firewire cards are in the $40 price range. Some are more expensive, some less, but the $30 ones work perfectly. Check oput your local Best Buy, Circuit City, or CompUSA for these.

4) The blue blacklight is slighly random. The newer iPods are more likely to have a blue blacklight, and 40 GB ipods are more likely to have a blue blacklight than a 10 GB iPods.

5) By VBR files you mean MP3s encoded in VBR? Then yes, yes they do.

1. 8 hours. Yes, it sucks, especially when most competitors are offering double that on average, but it can suffice.

2. Windows ME is arguably the worst mainstream operating system available; however, I believe there is a third-party program like ephPod that supports it.

3. Not only is 1.1 not officially supported, but it may have power issues. I only have 1.1, as well, which is why I'm buying a $19 Fire Wire card.

3a. Oh, there's the question. As I said before, I'm getting a cheap Fire Wire card online for $19 including shipping, no tax. USB 2.0 cards can probably be found for around $30.

4. I don't know what you're talking about, but there's no blue light on the iPod.

5. Not that I know of.

I have the 3rd gen 30GB.

1. usually 4-6 hours of use per charge
2. yes mine works with my windowsME. I use musicmatch 7.5 with the ipod plug-in and ipod manager. It works fine. But you may have a problem, cuz I'm betting the brand new ipods being sold today come with Itunes and Itunes does not work on windowsME, and ipod manager software was discontinued.
3. you must get either usb2.0 or firewire. I got an adaptec firewire card for $40. It was extremely easy to install.
4. no idea. Mine does not have blue light.
5. yes.

1. 6-7 hours if you skip songs and encode at ~192kbps (mp3 or AAC)

2. You need to borrow a PC with XP/2000 to format the iPod to FAT32 before you can use it on a PC, and then I recommend using Ephpod because it's free and doesn't require Mac-format translating software.

3. USB1.1 is faster than what people make it out to be. At 12mbps theoretical or maybe 1MB/s actual speed, it'll take about 16-20 mins for 1GB or an hour for 3GB.

4. From all the latest display ipods I've seen (at three different Apple Stores and at Rob-May), it appears that Apple is now making them all Nokia-cell-phone neon blue. But there's always the chance you'll get a bright blue/purple backlight (the best in terms of color and contrast, IMHO) or a white one (the worst in terms of brightness and contrast).

5. Sure does, mp3 VBR and AAC VBR (Apple's/iTunes's version of VBR or actual AAC VBR).

wait does the ipod work with usb1.1 because thats what i have and i dont want get usb2.o because i dont have the money. and if it does how long will it take to transfer 5gigs of music?

# 6 Re: Hey, potential iPOD buyer looking for advice..
Yes it works with USB 1.1.

The transfer speed is like 0.8 MB/s, do the math yourself.

5 gigs of music on usb 1.1 would take approximately 3 hours. USB 1.1 transfers at 500 kbps (kilobytes per second)

1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes
1 gigabyte = 1024 megabytes

5gb X 1024KB = 5120MB

5120MB X 1024KB = 25,600KB

It would take 170 minutes or 2.83 hours
5120MB X 1024KB = 25,600KB

This would be the off the top of my head guess approximately anyways because i had a rio mp3 player that held 32MB and used a parallel/USB port and it sucked hardcore. You dont want anything that slow for mass transfers trust me. 1 song will take about 4 seconds but it gets real real slow

BTW, apple kept in mind that users would want to mass transfer to the ipod, therefore usb 1.1 would simply not do, which is why it is not supported.

Thanks for the replies people :)

Cruzn, where did you order the Firewire card from? $19 is a steal.

Then you should check your USB speed again.

USB1.1 max speed is 12mbps (megabits per sec)

12mbps * 1byte/8bits * 1KB/1024bytes * 1MB/1024KB = 1.43MB/s

I took that and made it more "realistic" so it transfers only at 1MB/s.

Then 1GB=1024MB * 1sec/MB * 60sec/min = 17 minutes

So I rounded that up to 20mins per GB.

i think not. It would take way longer than that

# 12 Re: Hey, potential iPOD buyer looking for advice..
so it would take an hour and 40min to put all my music on the ipod?

# 13 Re: Hey, potential iPOD buyer looking for advice..
maybe. bottom line is its a long time. You may think it won't be so bad until you want to load a few dozen albums right before you take off to school or work and your stuck waiting for that stuff. 5 gigs on firewire would take about what 30 mins?

# 14 Re: Hey, potential iPOD buyer looking for advice..
I was wondering...

I have a cable modem (Optimum Online... REALLY fast), and I use USB, not ethernet. Since its so fast could that mean that uploading to my iPOD would be fast also? ANd how would I know if I have USB 1.1 or USB 2. I honetsly am not sure...

Your kidding right? I have to use someone elses computer because i have ME to format it for pc use? If so i must say i am not buying an ipod...pfft. All my friends computers who have xp use usb 2.0 i have a 1.1 card and was going to buy firewire to transfer music. This means that i would have to buy the usb cable in addition toa firewire card. That would be unnacceptable. Please tell me this is not true!

Windows ME isn't officially supported. You're lucky it can be used on Windows 9x at all...
