New Owner
sorry, i bet you guys get this alot. but i have a few questions.
im thinkin about a 10-20gig right now.. (for music only)
i have about 80 cds right now
but im ganna try to get TONS more.
i have about 350$ to spend on an ipod.
what should i get?
i dont think i want a 10gig.. im ganna be putting every cd i can get my hand on onto the ipod.
the 15gig sounds nice
should i just save up a lil more and get the 20gig?
also, where can i get one cheap? (from a reliable site)
also, do the head phones cords short out easily?
just about every set of head phones i buy end up shorting out after a year or 2. should be a big problem, il buy a new set of headphones if i need to. but still good to know.
how fast does it take to transfer data to the ipod? say 4mb (average song)
has anyone dropped their ipod? lets say i drop it outside, (i will be riding my bike with the ipod) and it hits the cement.. you think it would break it? can you buy new shells for it?
----
ive seen the iRiver thread. i didnt read to much about it. if you own an iRiver and suggest that instead, let me know.

I'd get a 20GB.
If you only have USB 1, songs will take forever to transfer, so just forget it. You either want to invest in a USB2 card or a Firewire card (or a combo card that has both ports, which is what I have). I suggest Firewire because not only will it recharge the battery (USB will not), but it won't require you to buy the $20 USB cable that Apple DOES NOT supply with the iPod. Anyway, I use firewire, and it takes about 1 second per song. Good stuff.
Headphones are headphones, I'm sure the Apple ones short out like any other.
And yeah, if you drop your iPod and it's not in a case, it's probably done for. Even if it is in a case, and you're riding a bike, I'd say It'd be done for as well. So don't drop it. Even if you could replace the casing, the internals would almost certainly be damaged.

Just to let you know, in case this might influence your decision, a 20 GB 1G refurb runs for around $288, and the 3Gs are $400 (new I believe). Just thought you should know, because PowerMax has great prices. It's almost like buying it used, except that refurb is better because it's getting it from a factory instead of a person.
