40 GB Today. 100 GB Tomorrow?

A month after purchasing a 30 GB Ipod, the 40 GB was released at the same price I paid for the 30 GB. Now, I knew that this could very well happen, but it still was dissapointing that I could have obtain 10 valuable extra GB had I waited a month.

This got me thinking. Does anyone have an accurate idea of what we should expect from Ipod in the next, say 3 years? Are 100 GB Ipod around the corner? Clearly, these mp3 players are going to get bigger, and I am not going to upgrade until a huge one comes out that that I feel will satisfy my 300 + CD collection that continues to grow. Let me hear some thoughts.....

Oh, and will the Ipod ever include radio access?

no one knows what is going to happen. that is up to steve jobs and his crew to decide.

on a side note, never buying and waiting for things to get larger/faster at same price isnt good for anyone. just look at japan....their economy slipped a lot because of that logic. even to the point were there isnt any interest for putting money in the bank! so be happy with your purchace and the fact that you are stimulating the economy.

I can predict at least 120GB, true color 640x480 screen, open support for all known codecs, AC3 sound and more, like telephone, notebook, and id for a car starting.

I paid $500 for my 30 GB IPOD, plus 50 for a firewire card that I installed. I'm sure when the Ipod gets to be over 100 GB's I will upgrade. Until then I have to be selective with every song. And no, I don't feel good about stimulating the American economy.

It isn't up to him, its up to what the hard drive manufactures decide (which in turn are influenced by companies), take the 20/40GB change, that was a change of spec due to the hard drive manufacturer.

with an average of 12 tracks per CD, that only comes to 3600+ songs, which would leave space for another 2000 (?) or more if you use AAC 128, which sounds like it would cater for your collection quite easily (that is assuming you use AAC @ 128 - if you're a stickler for sound quality that will eat up space)

also try this for the radio access -

I was thinking about this today while using my Ipod. It has a very basic screen, and I could see in the next few years the ipod screen becoming colorful, bigger, with more options, including artwork when each song plays in a little box in the corner of the screen. As much as I love my Ipod, I think the interface of the future Ipod's will make us look back and be like, "remember how it used to just have the text?".

I for one really don't care about extra flashy features like color screen and images etc...
I would rather have longer (much longer) battery life over anything else.
Well, maybe lower price ;) ...

i dunno, i still think just the 40 gigger is waayy more space than i could ever need.
Can anyone here honestly say that they have close to 100 gigs of music that they actually would want to carry aroung with them?

(chuckling) Heh- reminds me of what we said back when hard drives first came out, and had a whopping 5 Mb (yes, that's NOT Gigabytes, it's Megabytes)- "Whoa, I'll never need that much space!!"

You'll fill it up eventually with music you like, or files, or photos...etc...

I agree with Nemesis, Apple needs to extend the battery life as a first priority, then expand the size of the thing or add other features.

i saw this thing on tech tv about a media hub that had like 120gb, and the kid who was installing it said that he had 400gb of music alone!, i don;t really think that apple should focus on bigger hd space, because the battery doesn't even last long enough to play anywhere near the ammount of songs the ipod actually holds. Also, i don't believe that anybody could actually listen to 2+ weeks? of musc during a given period of time, even if they were on vacation, and people with huge collections could just use smart playlists to fill up their ipod each time they sync. 40 gb is a sh1tl0ad of music, even at 320kbps.

Hasnt anyone here seen the Zpod? Maybe its only for industry insiders. I'll just say this, 75GB 15 hr battery life.
