3rd Generation VS 4th Generation

Hey guys!!

I'm about to jump aboard the iPod Club but wanted to know what the differences were with regards to the above??

Is it simply differences in size?? I am looking at a 30GB 3rd generation model...Am I better off going for a 20GB or a 40GB model as these seem to be the 4th generation ones....

No, defiant, the 20 and 40gb models are not "gen4" they are simply just bigger hard drives in the same iPod. I would say that you are better off getting the 30gb because, they are discontinued, meaning big savings$$$.

Thanks for that mate - That would explain the rather decent price I was getting.

So from a sound quality and software point of view, is everything the same then - Just a different size...Sorry for the awkward questions but the Apple site is no help. :(

they are identical. just treat it like the rest of the sizes - 10,20 and 40. just the drive capacity varies and thats the only difference here. sound etc is just the same as its the same unit just with a different drive size.

One difference I think I have noticed is that the 4th Gen models (20GB & 40GB) have a remote control with all the play/stop functions accessible there.

Can anyone confirm whether the 3rd Gen models had this?

YES! Just listen to what people have told you. NO difference except capacity. It's actually even the same HD, it's just formatted to hold more data.

That may be another plus for the 15 GB and 20 GB iPods, since lower data density may make them less skip-prone.

Defiant - if I'm not mistaken the 15, 20, 30 and 40 gig ipods were delivered with a remote control. They are part of the same 3rd generation, the docking ipods, meaning they can be used with the ipod dock which was released in April 2003.

The 2nd generation ipods (more info here http://www.ipodlounge.com/faqs_more.php?id=1362_0_10_0_C) also had remote control but it is different to the docking ipod remotes (has a second pin plug).

Among ipod fans and users the term "4th generation ipod" denotes an ipod that is yet to be released.

Hi Gina,

The terminology is rather confusing - In light of this your definition is spot on.

I am now the proud owner of a new iPod. :D

Out of curiousity, how much are people paying for the new 20GB and 40GB iPods here in the UK.

Obviously presuming you have imported from abroad. ;)

PS: The Apple engraving facility into the iPod is AWESOME!!!!! Can't have everything I guess.
