Benefits of AAC on battery ...
I was just wondering, i don't know much about the AAC codec except that its suposedly smaller in size and better quality.
However becasue this is more compressed does it take more effort to decode it and play it than mp3. Or becasue mp3 was not developed by Apple (i assume AAC was) does the mp3 format take more effort to decode?
Basically what i'm trying to get at is does anyone codec use less battery life to decode, or if there is any difference is it going to be minimal.
I was just wondering if this would make any differnce to extending the battery life of the 3rd gen iPod's. Sorry if this has already been covered.

I don't think it should take more juice to decode AAC's. When you compress something, it's not really squishing, it's just taking away information that your ear doesn't notice, so I think it should perform the way it always has. Don't quote me, but I think that AAC is not more complex for the decoder, it's just designed better, and takes a more powerful computer to decode.
By the way, AAC was developed by the SAME guy that came up with mp3, in collaboration with some other people. I'm assuming he used Dolby sound labs, research, and probably some of their employess, because it is often referred to as Dolby AAC.

By the way, it looks like you have a couple of sweet computer setups. (64 mb video cards in desktop AND laptop :)

AAC takes more horsepower to play. I have an older laptop (pentium 1, 150 mhz, 48 mb ram) and it plays MP3s fine, but skips constantly when I try to play an AAC. What effect this may have on iPod battery life, however, I don't know.

it probably does take more power to decode. one other thing is that when playing an mp3 or an aac, it uses the same amounts of clocks. i believe that the ipod runs an 133mhz Arm proc (unsure). so even if aac does take more muscle to decode it still runs in the 133mhz. in addtion since the sound quality is the same at lower bitrate, it does save hard drive spin-up time thus more battery life.

Compression does not just involve removing information that you don't miss, it also involves storing the information you do listen to in a more compressed way. For example if the same sound was repeated multiple times, the codec might store the sound once, then a second bit that signals how many time to repeat it. The more complex the allogrithm used to represent the data, the more processing power needed to decomress on the fly. As far as battery life, I don't know if the difference in processor demand significantly effects the battery.

I recall (maybe in an Apple article?) that AAC actually gives you slightly better battery life, at least on the iPod. I forget the reasons...sorry for not having an exact source.
